Woodward: Bin Laden Capture Could Be October Surprise

Pulitzer prize winning journalist Bob Woodward, who helped uncover the Watergate scandal in 1972, says that the October surprise in the run-up to the presidential election could be the death or capture of Osama bin Laden.

Appearing on CNN’s Larry King Live, Woodward was asked by a caller why the U.S. couldn’t utilize its new “secret killing program,” as Woodward had earlier revealed, to capture Osama bin Laden.

Woodward responded, “We’ll see - maybe they can use it on Bin Laden and all of a sudden the September or October surprise is gonna be the apprehension or the death of Bin Laden.

Ah, well, now wouldn't that be a turn-up for the books? Very convenient.

With the election looming, news comes through that the cave-dwelling terrorist mastermind has been captured or killed! Au revoir, L'Osama. Or whatever.

Such news would surely give a strong boost to the chances of a Republican victory in November.

Well according to the source in THIS thread Bin Laden wasn't the mastermind so why would that be a big "surprise".

What exactly is he wanted for now?

First off the US isn't the only country who wants Bin Laden. He is the leader of a terrorist group who has attacked other countries besides the US.

And second I don't believe the source of the link is credible. But if it were true, many Americans believe Bin Laden is behind terrorist attacks in the US and other countries. My bet is the media won't pick up that link in new circulation. Only a handful of Americans read ATS forums.

there may be many trailer/britney lovers who still watch fox, but id be confident in saying majority of people are aware to the truth!

If they magically catch him just in time for elections... I'll be disgusted. Cause it means they could have ended the war a LONG time ago, but chose not to... instead choosing to keep bin laden out there running around until they needed him for their own personal popularity contest.

Yes a lot of people don't believe the official story. In fact a quick Google search showed me a poll. "46 percent of those surveyed believed the attacks were carried out by Al-Qaeda" 25 percent were undecided. Hardly a majority.

No matter what the White House says now his face is such a wanted symbol from years of publicity that his capture would give McCain the win anyway

I don't believe the source of the link is credible.

The key source is actually CNN's Larry King Live (and Bob Woodward's September 9 appearance on it, which you can see from the video).

It has been alluded to elsewhere, though.

Bush's Bin Laden Craving

There are new signs today that President Bush is pulling out all the stops to capture or kill Osama bin Laden before his term is up -- or better yet, before the November election.

Back in June, Sarah Baxter wrote in the Times of London about Bush's "final attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden before he leaves the White House.

"Defense and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. 'If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,' said a US intelligence source."

But just last week, Sara A. Carter wrote in the Washington Times: "U.S. ground forces crossed the border from Afghanistan and attacked suspected al Qaeda targets in Pakistan on Wednesday as part of an aggressive new strategy to kill or capture Osama bin Laden before President Bush leaves office, U.S. officials said."

And in a major article in The Washington Post today, Craig Whitlock writes about a new spate of Hellfire missile attacks by Predator drone spy planes in Pakistan.

"The attacks are part of a renewed effort to cripple al-Qaeda's central command that began early last year and has picked up speed as President Bush's term in office winds down, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials involved in the operations," Whitlock writes.

Get Osama Bin Laden before I leave office, orders George W Bush

President George W Bush has enlisted British special forces in a final attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden before he leaves the White House.

Defence and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. “If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source.

You are right. I just looked at the site and wrongly dismissed it.

Why would it matter? Supposedly, he isn't the man in charge anyways.
