12/21/2012?

I have the basics of the idea here but im having trouble with sources and finding more elaborate information. I've heard two schools of thought, one that 12/21/2012 is the apocalypse, and all things will cease to exist. Or the more comforting version, that this will simply mark the beginning of the Aquarian age and a new era. Any thoughts/insights on this?

I think when people say the "end of the world", it really means the end as we have known it. I think we could evolve or something to that effect.
