What is it? (No video :( )

I was out on a remote island this past weekend with very little light pollution, and saw a very odd shooting star, at least that's best I can describe it. Now... I've seen satellites, I've seen "fast-walkers", shooting stars, aircraft, all sorts of stuff, explainable and unexplainable, but I've never seen this.

It started off like a fastwalker, just a bright flash in the sky, like something exploding, it continued to move downwards through the sky (from zenith to south pole along the celestial sphere) and faded out as it moved. It would just get to the point where I could no longer see it, when it flashed again, continued the movement and gradually faded out as it did so. It did that a total of 4 times before it went past the horizon. I've never heard of satellites having fading lights on them. Any ideas? Anyone ever see this?
