I've read into the Tower's mythology and the related stories in various other mythologies somewhat, and the conclusion I have drawn is as follows:

A very long time ago, a group of people decided to build a very big tower. This tower was not brilliantly made, and so ended up collapsing during a great storm, or another kind of natural disaster.

The Tower was very famous, because men had not done anything of the like before.

Either that, or it was a cargo-cult response to seeing an alien civilization!

Parable, a moral tale of man's ego. Plus a cute story to account for all the languages that men spoke.

Why would people build a tower?

Parable and fact. The real Babel was a huge city with quantities of imigrants living in it. I've read that Pythagoras fled there after he was expelled from Egypt by it's conquerors, and he fled in Babel. To this description, Babel was a city of multiple nationalities and therefore there must've existed a variety of languages. Well of course I cannot say that above is true as I've not lived and seen things around those days, but I nevertheless tend to think that there is some truth in this story.

Which Pythagoras are you referring too?

I read a fascinating article somewhere which alludes to the interesting idea that the 'tower' of Babel was not actually a tall builing which reached into heaven. It was actually a portal or wormhole, metaphorically reaching the heavens and being a travelling device of great importance.

I can't pinpoint exactly where I found this, but there were diagrams and such which made a strong case.

If I can find this or provide more informartion, i will be sure to do so here.

I wasn't aware that there were many people going on by that name?

PS. Okay, since there was Pythagoras the philospher and Pythagoras the Sculptor (just checked out because I got confused by your comment), I meant the former.

I have included in the article at the top of the thread, theories about what the tower could have been
"gate of God"
Spacecraft
Communications device
Weapon of mass destruction
Potentially using Electro Magnetism (which the ancients appear to have been more in tune with than we are today)
The electomagnetism could explain the "Confusion of tongues"
Magnets can be used to turn off the "Brocas" area of the brain which controls speech & language.
Language historians continually return to the babel story as a viable fact none of the theories regarding language evolution can be wholly explained.

Many today believe we have been visited by other advanced species. It may be possible we were going too fast for our own good at some point in our past history and were dumbed down for it. This parable is in some way based on presumed facts of our nature. I think we have yet to fully understand the nature and possible agendas of our various visitors as well.

I am skeptical this is really all our fault. Giving the basics of some technologies, apparently there are typically those who see it as a military advantage rather than a peaceful objective for all. This can still be dispalyed by an external manipulation, as if by example, rather than trust.

It would appear to me that there are those species who prefer the human race to remain as they are, rather than evolve.

Look at it this way. In a pre-scientific society how would you explain why there are so many different langauges?

The tower of Babel story explains that. Its probably not any more complex than that.

Just a story.

Actually, there is other writings of what you believe, it may not be absolute proof, but it's something to back up your hunch.

In the book "The Message Given By Extra-Terrestrials" written by Rael, there is an explanation for the Tower of Babel. I will try to paraphrase it and keep it short...

It explains that yes, some pockets of humanity DID have advanced scientific knowledge in old times but there was mostly primitive tribes on the planet, and that ET humans called Elohim interacted with us periodically.Anyway, the Tower of Babel is said to have been a spaceship we (native humans) were building to visit their planet, but they (the elohim) didn't want us to do this because we had violent tendencies.
So they abducted the scientists working on the project and dropped them off in various remote regions of the earth among primitive tribes who spoke different languages, and destroyed their scientific instruments as well.
Talk about a roadblock

One should point out however

that this book is one of religious style belief and isn't actually based on evidence.

No offense, but I thought I made that clear when I typed:
"Actually, there is other writings of what you believe, it may not be absolute proof, but it's something to back up your hunch."

Thus implying it isn't evidence, proof, or whatever.. Just saying his idea isn't completely unheard of.

Food for thought...

The Tower of Babel

Modern day Tower of Babel ruins (on the outskirts of ancient Babylon-current day Iraq) are currently 150 feet above the plain with a circumference of 2300 feet. "The Greeks used the word Borsippa, which means Tongue-tower." 1

More later....

I was just reinforcing that concept and yes others have come up with similar ideas.

Haslune:

If it is a cargo-cult response, it means they must have seen a tower. Think Pocahontus' response to seeing London times a thousand: a massive sky-scraper would be awe-inspiring if you had just mastered agriculture, and lived in a mud hut.

Um...where did you get this?

Babylon (Babel is the early Hebrew word for it, probably derived from the Sumerian name) is a very well documented city. Lots of records, etc.

It was utterly villified in the Bible because Hammurabi decked out the Israelites and knocked down their first temple. The immigrants I believe you speak of are the captured Israelite elites who were taken their in what was known as the Babylonian Captivity.
