Russia considers recognising Georgian separatists

Will this be the event that will establish the pretext for a US/NATO intervention into the Black Sea/Georgian conflict? This may be the spark that sets off the tinder box. How will Russia recognizing the independence of Abkhazia and S. Ossetia affect the escalation of military arms in the Black Sea and in the oil rich Caspian/Caucasus region?

The US, Poland, Spain and Germany are all moving naval forces into the Black sea today as the Russian parliment is set to consider recognising the independence of Abkhazia and S. Ossetia. The US is moving the 6th Fleet's flagship, the USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20) into the Black sea also.

Dmitry Medvedev has gone on the record as saying that he would not oppose the recognition of these two regions if the Russian Parliment wishes him to do so. This could be viewed in a very negative light by the Western Alliance, perhaps as a willingness of the Russian People to go to war with NATO over this issue.

Am I the only person that sees the immense implications of this action, especially at this point in time?

way to go! I support these break away states,if they want to be independent let them, it is the same exact situation with Kosovo. If Nato wants to start WWIII with Russia because they are such hypocrites, let them! They have no right to get involved, they already split Yugoslavia and taken part of Serbia.

As an American I belive we need to start minding our own buisness. This situation has the potential to get serious very fast. We're not talking Iraq, Iran, or Afganistan. The Russians have enough nukes to set the world on fire. Forget that they'll be distroyed worse we're all toast if this happens.

I'm a US citizen also, and I spent 10 years in the USAF. For two years I worked with "Looking Glass" the Airborne Nuclear Command Post. This was during Mad Ronnie's administration, holly heck man, did we come close on several occasions, the news never covered our alerts. The nightmares I had then were horrific, in the last couple weeks they've started coming back. Tonight I can't sleep, so I'm posting and calling in sick tomorrow for work.

At 10 am Moscow time (about 1 and a half hours from now) the Independence debate will be opened on the floors of the Russian Parliment.

I wouldn't go running for the hills just yet ,USA/NATO will NOT start ww3 over this,i guarantee it! Although heavily backed by the west,Georgia is not in NATO. The de-facto Georgian separatists should get the right to become independent states if they so choose,in the case of South Ossestia, they are 90% Russian.

Russia is almost certainly going to recognize independence for Abkhazia, South Ossetia... and eventually the Crimea as well. The want Sevastopol back.

The US will raise a huge stink about it, and in the end not do a damned thing.

The idea is to drive up tensions to justify fat defense budgets - they won't actually engage Russia militarily.

Lots of risk in an actual shooting war with the Russians, and not much money to be made.

Yes xmotex, I agree with your argument totally, the US's defense budget is approaching near one half a trillion dollars a year. Gobbs o' money for the defense establishment, but the Russian and Chinese budgets are also growing. Take these two rogue superpowers out of the picture and we can still create even more Bin Ladens and chase them endlessly. They will always have these "Goldstein" phantoms to prop up their defense budgets. Russia and China are real threats to US Global hegemony, why, because the US can't influence their election processes by pouring in hundreds of millions of dollars to back a pro-US candidate's campaign. Good examples of this were the recent German and French elections, where right of center candidates recieved funding from the US indirectly and topoled left of center pro-Russian socialist governments.

Other suscessful examples could include both the "Orange Revelution" in the Ukraine and Saakashvili's rise to power. A really good example of the dangers of US election rigging is Venezuela. Boy, was that a disaster!

My argument for a war with Russia now is that the US/EU alliance is the strongest it has ever been, now that Sarkozy and Merkel are onboard. This is the strongest colalition the conservative right has been able to form since the end of the cold war. This, combined with the advances in nuclear weapons technologies over the last 15 years, I feel that the Joint Chiefs have already given the green light for a pre-emptive strike on Russia, all we are waiting for now is for the media to establish a probable cause.

What many of the Europeans have to consider is that a lot of the gas piped into their countries comes from Russia or Russian controlled pipelines. That's a BIG incentive not to do anything too rash and have the Russians turn off the tap.
Russia may not have the big military stick they once had and waved about at us but they now have a very big economic and political one instead.

If the ramping up of fear of them damn Russkies is indeed just another cold war in the making, to feed the ravenous military industrial machine, then they will not start a shooting war and kill the cash cow.
