NATO battleships enter the Black Sea on an exercise as the alliance keeps rejecting any links between the move and the South Ossetia conflict.

While the conflict-ridden Georgia lies within the 900-kilometer reach of the drill's whereabouts, NATO keeps billing the measure as "conducting a pre-planned routine visit to the Black Sea region to interact and exercise with our partners Romania and Bulgaria."

We have a seriously tense situation between the U.S, Georgia and Russia at the moment, so why is NATO sending Battleships to the Black Sea? Provocation maybe? I don't know, but it does seem strange that a seemingly "innocent" pre-planned routine visit should be sent near that area at this time.

Don't worry about it, we don't have any battleships entering the Black Sea, just a couple of warships and a Coastguard ship. Nothing to worry about that the Russians can't handle.

It's akin to Russia buzzing various NATO countries airspace with their bombers. They pose no threat but it still sends a strong message.

The Major would like a picture of the "NATO battleships" entering the Black Sea, or any other body of water. The Major would like to see a picture of any "NATO battleship" currently in service anywhere.

The Major is amused by "news sources" that get the simplest facts incorrect and then are used to bolster a point of view or an agenda.

Maybe i am not getting it right, but destroyers are as far as i know a little smaller then battleships. Why not call those vessels carriers then to make it look even scarier?
As for what they do there - they show that Georgian port of Poti which is under Russian control should be freed. Also,since Turkey is in NATO black sea saw its share of NATO ships.
And as for provocations - my personal believe is that sides already agreed on new cold war and dance together to make it happen.

Major, they don't mean ships with NATO painted on the side, they mean ships from NATO country's.
What specific country's they probably didn't want to say, because it would look like naming particular country's as aggressors.

The Major is sure that the article states that the NATO ships in question are "battleships." While the Major may just be a ground pounding foot soldier at heart, the Major has just enough nautical sense to know what a "battleship" is, and what certainly didn't sail into the Black Sea. The Major will reiterate his requisition for a picture of said "NATO battleships" in the Black Sea, or any other body of water.

As for NATO being used in conjunction with the word "aggressors," the Major is greatly amused.

NATO ships enter Black Sea for exercises

BRUSSELS, Belgium: NATO warships entered the Black Sea on Thursday for what the alliance said were long-planned exercises and routine visits to ports in Romania and Bulgaria.

The NATO flotilla includes Spain's SPS Adm. Juan de Bourbon, Germany's FGS Luebeck and the Polish ship ORP General K Pulaski. Romanian and Bulgarian ships will join them for exercises during a three-week deployment which NATO says has been planned for over a year.

Warship is not a battleship. Battleship is a class of naval vessels that is currently extinct. You can post that NATO's dinosaurs arrived in black sea - the same amount of truth.

A battleship is a large, heavily armored warship with a main battery consisting of the largest calibre of guns. Battleships are larger, better armed, and better armored than cruisers and destroyers.

With the decommissioning of the last Iowas, no battleships remain in service (including in reserve) with any navy worldwide.[citation needed] A number are preserved as museum ships, either afloat or in dry-dock.

Chips realizes that the pictures he posted were in fact warships and not 'battleships'. He acknowledged this. He just thought he'd post them up anyway. He was just trying to be helpful.

Chips hopes the Major is OK with this - but he also hopes that, in future, the Major will be a bit more polite and refrain from using and/or referring to tediously trite, cringeworthy terms like 'you fail' (the only genuine failure is resorting to that!)

There is a NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Headquarters located in Istanbul. The Bosphorous runs through Istanbul and connects to the black sea... I used to live there, as my father was stationed at the HQ. They ran alot of excercises, and they were always planned way in advance. This is probably nothing to worry about, just NATO practicing in the Black Sea which it now effectively controls a huge portion of. Good officers working there.

I wonder if Russia will have the cojones to bring their own show in the black sea also.

Now that would be something to talk about if it ever happen, then we many have some good substantial conspiracy to talk about.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet is centered around the Moskva, an 11,500 ton Slava-class cruiser carrying 16 SS-N-12 cruise missiles. Alone, she roughly equals the tonnage of the NATO frigates in this task group.

The most capable of the NATO ships listed by far is the Spanish Armada's F-100 frigate (really a destroyer in all but name) Adm. Juan de Bourbon - basically a mini-Aegis destroyer. The rest are relatively small escort frigates.

If NATO was going to send a force to challenge the Black Sea Fleet, this wouldn't be it. You'd want at least a pair of Aegis DDG's, better yet an attack sub. One problem is range - the NATO vessels are all equipped with Harpoons - around 200nm range. The SS-N-12 has a 500km range.
