I just watched the Men's Butterfly Swim, but the top rated US swimmer clearly came in second to the swimmer from another Country..
But....they said he beat the other smimmer by 1 - 1000ths of a second.
That's bullsh*t to me....
He is just trying to beat Mark Spitz's gold record of years ago, and the US is bending the rules to prove that he did it...

I just watched it too. I've got a DVR (like TiVo) and rewound and watched several times, plus the slow motion replays and camera shots from all different angles (No my DVR can't do that, it's what was shown after the race)
It was incredibly close. And Phelps got lucky.

On a side note, for the women's swim, one of the swimmers stalled for time and chatted everyone up while her competitor quickly changed out of a torn suit and into a new one so she could swim. The officials don't have to ask swimmers to wait; but they did. Good sportsmanship!

*edited to add: Unlike the wrestler who dropped his bronze medal on the ground and walked away from it because he didn't do better.

Apparently, the winners are decided by whoever touches the wall first.

It is a touch sensitive wall, so, that how it is...

Is it shady looking, yes, but, you you rather want a pannel of judges to decide? Or a presure sensitive mechnism, that records the time RIGHT WHEN the altheate touchs the wall...

0.01 seconds is a VERY small margin... WAY TOO SMALL TO SEE WITH THE NAKED EYE...

Even earlier, in a relay race, the US beat France by 0.08 seconds, and it looked like they touched at the same time...

This is 300% closer... so, your OWN biasis will take over... Trust the results of events where the Athleates decide the outcome...

Look to Gymnastics for Judges that decide the match...

At that very moment, the Serbian swimming team was looking up at the same results from the edge of the pool deck, screaming another chorus of “NO!” The Serbians would later protest the results, to the point that FINA had to review a replay that slowed the race down to one ten-thousandths of real time. The video and timing system showed that Phelps had indeed won, if only by a few cells at the tips of his fingers. Even the Serbs had to relent after FINA ushered them into the video room and showed them frame-by-frame results. But even now, the win looks indecipherable to the naked eye.

Phelps' seventh gold most incredible yet

Cavic did protest the results with his team, but when they were shown the replay slowed down greatly Phelps, by the skin of his teeth, edged him out. Gymnastics judges, that's a whole level of fishiness that needs to be addressed, but Phelps' win appears legit.
