man some of you people are ridiculous at spinning the facts into sensationalism to try to startle everyone into thinking ww3 is starting.

"uh oh russia bombed a base that had u.s. troops in it". Yes Russia bombed a base that had 1000 u.s. marines in it....LAST MONTH. They are all gone now why would you leave out that convenient tid bit?
Jesus people calm down there's no ww3 starting.

If anything should get you worried it's the gigantic u.s. navy armada heading to the persian gulf i.e. IRAN as we speak.

Georgia asked the United States for planes to bring back its 2,000 troops serving as part of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, a U.S. official said.

"All day today, they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting [the] civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among [the] civilian population all around the country," Georgia's president, Mikhail Saakashvili, said Friday. "This is the worst nightmare one can encounter."

This is escalating pretty interestingly... heh

Women and Children killed means bombing indescriminately... With the desire to eliminate... heh

I think this all has happened so fast no one has caught up to it yet. I can tell you the Russian military has been inactive for a long time, so this is news seeing an activation and engagement by Russian forces...

Well I keep asking what Defcon Level the U.S. is standing at currently.
I was thinking Defcon 3. I think any less than Defcon 3 would mean that we are directly involved with an act of war directed solely at the United States.

I don't believe it is public knowledge what the current DEFCON level is. I could be wrong though.

DEFCON 5: This is the condition used to designate normal peacetime military readiness. An upgrade in military preparedness is typically made by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and announced by the United States Secretary of Defense.

I can say with almost certainty we are not at DEFCON 5.

DEFCON 4: This refers to normal, increased intelligence and the heightening of national security measures.

This seems too low, or high, whichever, for us being deployed in the Middle East and with the terror threat level at Elevated.

DEFCON 3: This refers to an increase to force readiness above normal. Radio call signs used by American forces change to currently-classified call signs.

This is possible and may be the most likely level, only because it isn't known how many times DEFCON 2 has been reached.

DEFCON 2: This refers to a further increase in force readiness just below maximum readiness. The most notable time it was declared was during the Cuban Missile Crisis, although the declaration was limited to Strategic Air Command. It is not certain how many times this level of readiness has been reached.

Unlikely right now. If we were in a nuclear stand off, and the threat was real, I would expect us to be at this level.

DEFCON 1: This refers to maximum readiness. It is not certain whether this has ever been used, but it is reserved for imminent or ongoing attack on US military forces or US territory by a foreign military power.

About as possible as DEFCON 5 at this point. This would most likely be the level we reach if World War III ever erupted.

So that's what they call all the tanks, Migs and bombing of Georgian cities as we speak - peace-keepers? Hmmm.

What exactly would be U.S.'s justification for entering yet another war. Isn't two enough? This is one fight where the U.S. does not belong. Of course since it is taking place on earth the Americans may feel entitled to intervene. Sad.

Pardon me for going asleep and not plugging my "information catcher" in.

I was only stating what I had heard on Sky News as breaking before I reviewed the thread.

Where is credible proof of any large scale bombing? So far Georgia is just talking and talking and talking. It has been doing that for the last 4 years, and much of what it has said in those 4 years amounts to fairy tales. Lets see some pictures of Tbilisi. I am sure Georgia could provide these. Just don't let Reuters touch them.

Georgia's propaganda machine is in full swing. So far nearly none of their news is confirmed by outside sources. Saakashvilli might be lying his ass off - he hasn't got much time left.

Sky has reported the 1400+ figures given by the South Ossetians since they were reported. The BBC hasn't covered it nearly as much, so what else are we supposed to watch?

NATO warns Russia over Georgia move

Nato has warned Russia that its recent troop build-up in Georgia's two breakaway regions undermines its neighbour's territorial integrity.

Russia's moves in Abkhazia and South Ossetia were raising tensions in the area, a Nato spokesman said.

Moscow has accused Georgia of preparing to invade Abkhazia, and says it is also boosting Russian peacekeeping forces there and in South Ossetia.

Tbil More..isi has described the Russian move as "irresponsible".

"The steps that have been taken [by Russia] and the rhetoric have increased tensions and undermined Georgia's territorial integrity," Nato spokesman James Appathurai said.

He also urged both Moscow and Tbilisi to avoid harsh rhetoric.

US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe on Wednesday said Washington was "concerned abut reports from the region".

The European Union has appealed for caution, saying to increase troop numbers would be unwise given current tensions.

Over recent weeks Russia appears to have been significantly turning up the pressure in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the BBC's diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says.

He says that many Western diplomats see these moves as part of a more assertive Russian policy in the wake of Western recognition of the independence of Kosovo in February.

The row over Moscow's support for separatist enclaves in Georgia now threatens to provoke a more serious strain between Russia and the West, our correspondent adds.

'Aggressors'

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that Moscow would take "retaliatory measures" if Georgia used force against its breakaway regions.

Russia said Georgia was massing 1,500 soldiers and police in the upper Kodori Gorge, the only part of Abkhazia which remains under government control.

In response, Moscow said it was increasing Russian peacekeepers in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Mr Lavrov said that Russia had to protect Russian-passport holders in the two regions.

Georgia denies any build-up of its own forces in the area, and says that Russia is taking provocative action.

"We think that this step, if they take it, will cause extreme destabilisation in the region," said Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze.

"From now on, we consider every [Russian] soldier or any unit of military equipment coming in [to Abkhazia and South Ossetia] as illegal, potential aggressors and potential generators of destabilisation."

Kosovo precedent

Russia has kept a peacekeeping force in Abkhazia and South Ossetia under an agreement made following the wars of the 1990s, when the regions broke away from Tbilisi and formed links with Moscow.

There are around 2,000 Russians posted in Abkhazia, and about 1,000 in South Ossetia.

Tensions between Russia and Georgia have flared up recently, despite Russia lifting economic sanctions against Georgia earlier this month.

Last week, Georgia accused a Russian plane of shooting down an unmanned Georgian spy plane - which Russian authorities insisted was shot down by Abkhaz rebels.

And on Tuesday, Georgia said it was blocking Russia's entry to the World Trade Organization.

Many in Abkhazia believe that Kosovo's announcement of independence from Serbia in February provides a precedent for it to be recognised as an individual state.

Although it has its own flag and postage stamps, it is not internationally recognised. www.liveleak.com...
