I saw in Euronews some 10 minutes ago some troops (I don't know if Russian or Ossetian) grabing what they wanted and practicing with a M-16 (or symilar, I am not a weapons expert
), because there were thousands of clips and tens of guns abandoned by the Georgians when they left Gori.

TBILISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Russian troops appeared to be handing over a key Georgian city Thursday, U.S. officials said, warning that any further military action from Moscow aimed at Georgia could hurt American-Russian relations "for years to come."

Georgia, We're Talking War, Not Peaches

So what's going on with this God-awful mess between Russia and the small breakoff state within Georgia (the one with Borscht, not chitterlings)?

U.N. Secretary General says that parts of Georgia are now lawless and expresses concern over the humanitarian situation

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 14 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday he was concerned about the humanitarian situation, lawlessness and lack of access for aid workers in war-torn parts of Georgia.

He is "extremely concerned by the humanitarian impact of the recent conflict on the civilian population in Georgia, which has suffered loss of life and injury, significant damage to property and infrastructure," Ban said in a statement issued by his spokeswoman's office.

Ban said it also has caused a significant displacement of people.

He urged "all sides to control forces under their command to ensure that the current state of lawlessness ceases."

I'm going to bed for a few hours. I have faith that you will all keep this thread as well updated as you all already have. I think this is one of the most informative threads on ATS right now. I wish every thread in the breaking news zone were like this. By and large - with a few notable exceptions - we've all been civil to one another and have reported the news as it’s come in from multiple sources. I do wish maloy would return so as to provide his take as well, because despite any disagreements some may have had with him, I considered it truly valuable and essential for us to have a well rounded perspective.

I don't disagree regarding Georgia's potential NATO status. Georgia will not be entering NATO anytime soon. That said, I think it has pretty thoroughly angered Poland, the Ukraine, Estonia and others along Russia's western border, who will likely strengthen their ties with the US even further in the coming weeks and months as a result.

And even in the case of Georgia, the US is now heightening its presence in the region, under the guise of 'humanitarian aid', of course. They may not be an official NATO member, but the US has not indicated that it will abandon them.

So what have the Russians really accomplished here? They've prevented Georgia from entering NATO, but not prevented US support of the state. In the process, they've whipped up a diplomatic row in Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, in opposition to their actions. They've gained precious little from this, IMO.

Russia occupies Georgia towns, tension with Ukraine
14 Aug 2008 15:41:06 GMT
Source: Reuters

* Russia forces move in and around three Georgian towns
* Moscow, Ukraine argue over Russia's Black Sea fleet
* Bush orders aid to Tbilisi in military planes

* U.S. Gates says Russia's behaviour has major implications

By Matt Robinson GORI, Georgia, Aug 14

(Reuters) - Russian troops and armour moved in or around at least three Georgian towns on Thursday, ignoring demands by Washington that Moscow respect Georgia's territorial integrity. Reuters witnesses saw Russian troops in the key central Georgian town of Gori and outside the western town of Zugdidi.

Residents in the Black Sea port of Poti saw a Russian incursion. In Moscow, the Russian General Staff said it was legitimate for "Russian peacekeepers" to be in Poti and for what it termed "reconnaissance parties" to be in Gori, two days after Russia signed up to a French-led peace plan to stop the fighting.

Russia and France Will Hold Their Own Naval Exercises without the U.S.

France will not refuse to hold the FRUKUS 2008 international naval exercises, in which Russia will take part, representatives of the Russian Pacific Fleet information service told Interfax on Thursday. At the request of the French Navy, they added, a ship from the Pacific Fleet and the French frigate Vendemiaire will hold separate exercises in the Sea of Japan.

You see that video above ?

They don't like it when the truth comes out .. cut to adverts! , better watch that one quick before they delete it .

This has to be a major subject for this forum, there has to be a conspiracy of enormous proportions, the western media is denying the very thing I am watching on my tv right now . How did they do it , all major media outlets..in unison ?

They can't keep up the lie, not forever . When it comes out , there has to be serious questions about the conduct of so called professional journalism and more so, the extent of the government control over the media and it's rights to maintain that kind of control.

This video shows how hard the life of war reporters. The car carrying 4 Turkish journalist were shot at without warning. All four journalist survived but the first shot hit the head of the passenger at the front seat and cut his eye. There is a chance that he may loose the sight at that eye. Another one hit at his shoulder and the third one has a small wound. Two of them transfered back to Turkey with a charter jet.

In the video, the front passenger is warning that there must be some georgian troops around and then he is hit on the head. After the initial shock, they try to move back but the car stops. One of them (front passenger?) tries to calm others and warn them that he is bleeding and may loose consciousness. You can hear some of them are saying the last rituals in islamic tradition. Later the georgians kick one of them. After the things are clarified they are taken to a local hospital and interviewed there.

Yup, that's the vid I saw earlier on on BBC World. I posted about it a couple of pages back.

To me that guy looks more like an SO militiaman rather than a regular Russian soldier.
But he sure is a bit trigger happy.
