According to AFP dispatches, Georgia is massing artillery and troops near Gori.
A top US military official has said Russian troops appear to be preparing to withdraw.
Earlier, US officials reported Kremlin forces were wrecking Georgian military installations as they moved through the country.
Defence secretary Robert Gates said Russian behaviour had "profound implications on security relations" between the two countries in the future.
Today, a Georgian interior ministry spokesman said Russian forces were "destroying" Gori, just 50 miles north-west of the capital, Tbilisi, and laying mines.

I can't disagree with that at all. The Russians won a military victory, but otherwise, it has been a disaster for them politically and certainly hasn't been 'good' for anyone else in that regard.
(dpa) - The troopers of Russia's 58th Army, fresh from chasing their US-trained Georgian opponents out of South Ossetia, are just in love with their NATO-issue loot.
"Check out this war trophy," a T-62 tank commander named Viktor proudly pointed out to a Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa reporter. "A real NATO-standard bayonet!"

I don't necessarily disagree with you, except that I think the Russians have made their predicament even worse and have gained little in the process. All this will serve to do is heighten the resolve of the United States and Eastern Europe to continue opposing them. It may also awaken Western Europe to do the same.
