Russians seem to move too fast , it's more a fluid warfare . By the time reports get in to western media the russians are gone and doing something new , the story becomes old/false before it's halfway wired to the US.

One would have thought that they would have done that yesterday...

Important Update/Clarification (i.e. maybe we can all calm down now)

TBILISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Russian tanks have returned to the Georgian city of Gori, but only to help facilitate the pullout of their forces, Georgia's Interior Ministry says.

Explosions heard in Gori Thursday were the result of Russian troops clearing unexploded ordnance, the Interior Ministry said.

*sigh of relief*

www.cnn.com...

This really should teach us all not to jump to conclusions (assuming it is accurate - it's from Georgia itself though. I doubt they'd fabricate about Russia not attacking.)

Is that Russia's statement
Shooting at journalists, increasing troops, re-entereing Poti, all because of some unexploded ordinance?

Sure sounds a bit dodgy to me

It's not Russia's statement. It was the statement of Georgia's Interior Ministry (which, again, has been wrong before - but not about Russia not attacking.)

I think you're probably right, actually.

The Russians have been lightning-quick throughout all of this, while the Western media has been... well, the Western media has resembled a sort of narcoleptic, wheelchair-bound sloth.

The BBC might as well report its breaking news stories via a carrier pigeon.

I'll wait till I see further confirmation. Everything happening there seems a bit odd.

No offense, but haven't they been saying that sort of thing for days now? It seems more like tactics of distraction to me.

Anything is possible of course. I don't trust it either, per say.

However, it isn't Russia saying this. It's Georgia. Why would Georgia falsely claim that Russia isn't attacking them and is helping them?

We still don't know anything. Personally though, I'm hoping it's cause for a sigh of relief.

As you should. And you're right, it does sound very confusing and weird. I'm just trying to be optimistic and avoid jumping to the conclusion that Russia is attacking the town because of the escalation that would constitute at this stage.

Perhaps the Georgian official mixed the Senaki report with the Gori report?

But that still doesn't explain Poti.

Georgia accuses Russia of 'destroying' Gori, Poti port UPDATE

TBILISI (Thomson Financial) - Russian troops are "destroying" the city of Gori and the port in the city of Poti, the Georgian interior ministry spokesman told Agence France-Presse on Thursday.

"The Russian troops are destroying the city of Gori. There are sounds of explosions. They are mining the city," spokesman Shota Utiashvili said.

"They are destroying everything in Poti port... they are destroying the newly built roads in western Georgia," he added.

Well about 10 minutes after that family went to back to the green room they did in fact report the same as CNN, that Russia is moving further into Georgia.

Abandoned or not, its a strategic move on Russia's part to be taking advantage of the absence and eliminating what could be used against them later. If that is all that is being done, I still wouldn't consider it as being an acceptable thing to do. Even if its just ammo, its still considered part of Georgian infrastructure, isn't it?

In Moscow, Russia's foreign minister declared that the world "can forget about any talk about Georgia's territorial integrity."

Source: www.usatoday.com...

This is precisely what I predicted Russia would say (yesterday). Hopefully the U.S. won't make this a major sticking point.

The declaration from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came simultaneously with the announcement that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was meeting in the Kremlin with the leaders of Georgia's two separatist provinces — a clear sign that Moscow could absorb the regions.

I've been expecting this might happen. S.O. sought Russian assistance in the hope of independence, but they may actually end up being annexed by Russia. Or at least Russia might try that on. A negotiated outcome might eventually lead to true independence, as the U.S. might emphasize that annexation means Russia taking territory from a country that was on the verge of being incorporated into NATO, which could arguably set a precedent.

Well I give up. Clearly not even people in the same ministry know what's happening at this point. Interior ministry says Russian forces are assisting in withdrawal and exploding unsed ordinance, then says Russia is destroying two cities. Which is it?

Like I said, I give up trying to ascertain the truth.
