Very well put. If the Russians move on Tblisi then it's game on. It's my belief the Russians baited the Georgians into acting in South Ossetia and it wouldn't surprise me if the Georgian's flipped that around and baited the Russians into moving on Tblisi at this point.

we have an operational missile defense system that is in use and has been tested, missles really arent a threat anymore, one or two may get through but the place you call russia would get nailed with about 499 neutron bombs, these bombs kill people , and have no fallout, they leave structure standing, then georgia could walk in and take over

so no im not worried about a nuclear holocaust, only ones to watch for are the ones they handcarried in here, and we have em over there too,

you could probally kiss new york, washing dc, chicago goodbye, but that is if we havent already found these contingent bombs and got rid of them already

Sorry. The only way the US can achieve not total destruction of their side is if they coordinate with NATO and attack Russia by surprise with all they've got and are successful at wiping out over 90% of russian nuclear land forces... and that they find at least 75% of Russia nuclear submarines and take them down before they launch their strikes.

So ... unlikely in a normal time, even less so when the Russian army is on high alert.

I saw Bernard Kouchner visiting one of the 16 camps of refugees , on the alexander stubb mediation visit . I don't know of any other foreign national ambassadors that have been there ( to the refugees) as yet . In which he does say that he believed that the events they describe are true.

Not much around about his visit , best page i guess is :

I've never lost respect for the Russian people. They've suffered through some of the worst Tyrants in human history from the Czars through the Reds. I'd really hoped that they would come out of the past couple of decades as a strong and decent country. Until this incedent, I'd wished that we had leaders in the West as concerned with thier national interests as Puting seemed to be about Russian interests.

I served in the US Army from 95-98 and several years after that in the reserves. Even during that time we called our targets on the range "Ivan"s. Even then, I'd thought it was an anachronism, I no longer feel that way.

MOSCOW, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has urged France, which is mediating in its conflict with Georgia, to encourage Tbilisi to sign a binding agreement not to attack its separatist regions, the Kremlin said on Thursday.

Medvedev late on Wednesday spoke by telephone with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who helped outline the basic principles of the ceasefire over Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, the Kremlin said in a press-release.

"D.Medvedev noted that the most important thing now for ensuring a sustainable process of normalising situation in the region is the (non-attack) agreement ... rather than U.N resolutions or declarations," the press-release said.

I sincerely hope that this conflict doesn't turn into a situation similar to the one between the Israelis and Palestinians, in which contradictory statements and actions from both sides result in neither side ever signing on to deals that they only agree on "in principle," eventually leading to one side or the other declaring that they are unreliable peace partners and thus must be dealt with militarily.

That kind of long, protracted, simmering, on-again/off-again conflict seems like a real possibility, but I am hoping that both sides can avoid it.

It basically is about fear ... The fact that the US has had generations to mistrust and fear the "Dirty Ruskies) The same is with Russia i believe.. They have also had generations of people who were told over and over and over not to trust the "Western imperial pigs" etc

The fear and mistrust has been propagated for years by both our governments for years and years so it is no wonder that when tensions do happen no side believes the other.

It doesn't help that all sides media outlets have no credibility at all ether.. When you can't trust your own government and you cant trust what the media says just who the hell do you trust?

It is a conundrum

The thing they were saying about .. do you want to be allys with us, or a virtual project with Georgia. Can't help thinking that was an indication towards the balance of powers in this 'great game' . China, Russia, and the US . Neither side wants to see an alliance between the other 2 , that would shift the power balance very much against who was left out of that alliance . Wonder if that was another way of saying Moscow may make overtures to Beijing if you prefer this minor alliance with Georgia.

Because , before now .. it was still possible for a US/Rus alliance, although strained, but not impossible. Maybe it was the point of no return indicator, after this veiled invite.. no chance at all if you continue .

I know that'll come after years and years of 'commie' hating , but no government in history has been able to shape the opinion of it's populace via the media as the US govn't can do today , perhaps wouldn't take too many years to re-shape popular opinion for a more positive view. But that won't happen now .

Georgian officials say that Abkhazi forces have crossed the border and occupied Georgian territory in the Zugdidi district (though apparently not in the town of Zugdidi itself):

GANMUKHURI, Georgia - A few dozen fighters from the separatist region of Abkhazia crossed a thin slice of land dotted with Georgian villages Wednesday and planted their red, white and green flag in Georgian territory in a brazen challenge to the country's sovereignty.
...
"This is Abkhazian land," one of the fighters proclaimed, planting the flag on the Georgian side of a bridge across the Inguri river. "The border has been along this river for 1,000 years," separatist official Ruslan Kishmaria said at the bridge on the outskirts of Ganmukhuri, a village previously held by Georgia.
...
Officials in the Georgian town of Zugdidi, near Abkhazia, alleged the separatists' move was a violation of the cease-fire. They said Abkhazian forces crossed the border and occupied villages on the Georgian side.

"They breached the agreement. They occupied territory that belongs to Zugdidi district," said Tengiz Shanava, aide to the district chief.

Someone posted a few pages back a video of an American on vacation in SO and claimed it wasn't propaganda

link to the video

Well, that guy actualy has a SO passport, issued by the SO president in 2007.

Knowing that, it does atleast raise some questions on whether it was or wasn't propaganda.

What was the name of the US State Department official that said it appeared that Georgia was responsible for the aggression? It happened on the 8th or 9th I think. Things get so lost now.

US and EU reconsider gas and oil investments in Georgia

Euresco (sp) sounded like pipeline. One of the southern pipelines to be shelved.

I update as i hear more

Russian source , so for fair balance, need to be sure from other media.

I smell a deal going on if true.

They mentioned cost effectiveness.. yeah right.

---

Hearing some more stuff that US people could verify at sometime later.

McCain saying we need to re think Russian relationships ..( towards a positive view .. my words).

Sounds odd thou , he'll be asleep right now I'd have thought .

This would lend credence to my thoughts on the friend or virtual project thoughts earlier, if true .

We hear so many truths, untruths and mistruths , all we can do is report what they say and try read between the lines to figure out what is going on .

Pipeline name is :Nabucco . and .. " latest events foreshadows a greater interest in the pullout of western investment"

Found an article in todays moscow times on a similar theme, but it is not stating the withdrawal of western finance as the tv does.

www.themoscowtimes.com...

www.themoscowtimes.com...

Sounds like a planned pipeline won't be built, not an existing one taken offline.

Latest I heard was that Russia wants Georgia to sign an agreement, stating it will not return to Abkhazia and S.O.

I haven't found anything yet to confirm this.

This is promising if it is true.. (Who the hell knows what is true anymore)
Then again the Russians did say they were going to pull back and have a cease fire then went ahead and continued into Georgia. (That is if you believe anything that is coming out of the area)

I think all 3 leaders involved should be kicked out of office for the stupidity that has taken place. This last week should never have happened.

The very least that should happen is the people of Georgia should elect someone who isn't such a blatant idiot.

I think your facts are skewed a bit though ...

It's Putin that is the much bigger culprit here.

It's not over yet so long as Putin is at the helm.

Polish Leader Slams French Peace Plan For Georgia

Poland's President Lech Kaczynski Wednesday criticized a plan by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to end Russia's conflict with Georgia, saying it failed to protect Georgia's territory.

"We've heard talk about the conditions for suspending operations, and there's not one word about Georgia's territorial integrity," Kaczynski told reporters in the Georgian capital.
