Oh, wow. I was not aware that you could actually trace it back to its origin from the blast residue/ radiation signature/ whatever. That is indeed some pretty damn impressive technology!

Ah well, its for the best that we not have to think about that option in any case, that is truly a scenario from the depths of hell itself.

Ahh, it's what's on the inside that counts Lethil
This dame didn't even know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was so I'm not expecting her to be anything more than just a mouthpiece.

In summary of what's going on:

Russia is pissed.

Everything else is just semantics.

What has me worried is the way the media is portraying this conflict. It's all very sensationalized.

Here's a summary of what has happened for those new to the thread.

So far, the only facts that can be ascertained for certain are that Georgia launched an attack against South Ossetia causing sufficient casualties and damage that Russia launched a counterattack. The Russian counterattack consisted of air strikes, and the retaking of South Ossetia, with the most pitched and intense fighting in the capital thereof. During this time, Russia claimed that the number of casualties was tantamount to genocide committed by Georgia. U.N. estimates say that 40,000 people have been displaced.

Russia began to build up more forces in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, eventually crossing the Abkhazi border into Georgia. They occupied a police station in one town, and a large air base in Senaki. Around the same time, Georgia claimed that Russian forces were crossing the Ossetian border into Georgia, and that an invasion of Gori was imminent. Russia denied this, and subsequently Georgia changed their stance, saying that Gori was only suffering shelling and air strikes.

Today, Georgia again says that Russia has taken Gori (although a statement by the president later reversed that statement.) Observers from CNN and Reuters on the ground, as well as international diplomats, all said that Gori had not been taken by Russia, and that it was empty. They did however say that Georgia forces were fleeing Gori rapidly and with an apparent sense of urgency. Russia denies that it has taken Gori, and on the ground reports would seem to confirm that denial. Russia also now says that they have withdrawn from Senaki. There is no independent confirmation of this thus far.

Georgia also says that Russia has taken Poti. This is unconfirmed, but Russia denies it.

That's all we know so far. We don't know anything else for certain in terms of the positions of Russian forces, whether they've mounted a larger invasion, etc.

Yet the media headlines portray it as a full scale Russian invasion, buckling Georgia, and splitting the country in half. There is simply, thus far, no substantive evidence to support such a sensational claim, and I think we all need to take a step back and be objective in our observations of these media reports. I have no bias in favor of Russia or Georgia. What I want is to ascertain the truth, and we have no way of doing that so long as the media reports statements directly from Russian and Georgian authorities as fact, without independent confirmation. The first claim (yesterday) of a Gori occupation should have taught us that.

I'm not denying the possibility of a full scale invasion anymore than the possibility of outright Georgian genocide in South Ossetia. Both, if confirmed, would be horrible atrocities in my opinion, but then I view war itself as a horrible atrocity. I just want to be objective and to avoid being misled by either Georgia, Russia, or the media.

ask mopusvindictus where the list came from that he presented , it isn't from the same source,

I got it from Europe Business... but it is not the origina post... the list is circulating the net and seems to be based largely upon the list of ships that participated in Brimstone last week...

Also some information coming in from the jeruselem Post regarding Israeli escorts of us ships through the suez

The thing that concerns me is...

We have 3 Carrier battle groups in or headed to the Gulf region

and another full fleet in the Caribean gaurding Hugo (wtf for i have no major idea)

another fleet would almost certainly be left in the mediteranean...

Thats almost Half our Navy... engaged ELSEWHERE

So my concern... what kind of Coverage do we have off the Mssive Atlantic and Pacific Coasts Guarding against Russian and or Chinese Submarines!!! which in essence is already a difficult thing to do when properly deployed forces are in place

The current U.S. Navy battle force fleet numbers 285 combat and support ships, including 12 aircraft carriers, 14 ballistic missile submarines, 53 nuclear-powered attack submarines and four guided missile submarines.

Seems to me that we have 5 Carrier Battle groups engaged away from our coasts and my Guess is..we aren't leaving Japan undefended atm...

thats 6 with 2 not in service that leaves 3 fleets gaurding America?

I am thinking seriously that if Ivan pulls a rope a dope and steams into the North atlantic or Pacific and ignores the Gulf... because we would still have to fight over Iran before ever being a genuine threat...

they could be in sack position of either of our coasts

Like Hitler... spreading too thin over here ...

There was report on CNN a little while ago of NATO advisors flying to Georgia tommorow for an emergency meeting with the Georgian government, which I thought was kind of odd. Since the EU and other organizations already have people there.

Sorry I think you misunderstood that. The Georgian Foreign Minister is flying to Brussels to attend an emergency NATO meeting, which was called by Russia.
