Morning everyone (at least where I am!) this thread certainly hasn't slowed - so I guess the conflict hasn't either.

Bush tells Russia to reverse course in Georgia

"Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century," Bush said.
"There is evidence that Russian forces may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city. If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia," he told reporters at the White House after returning from China.

It seems they're really pushing into Georgia...

I may be falling into the well documented pitfall of "ATSMania" after a few days of watching this develop, but here is a scary thought for you all.

Georgia, as a former soviet state, is of course a logical place for abandoned soviet Nukes to turn up. Makes sense, right?

So do you think our good friend the missing Barksdale nuclear warhead might make an appearance, fighting on the side of the Georgians? Just blame it on a missing soviet nuke, and nobodies the wiser, after all.

Now that's a terrifying thought indeed...

The followup news story will be "Putin tells Bush to sit on it and spin"

Bush can cry all he wants about the "territorial integrity of sovereign states", after Iraq most of the planet is just going to point and laugh, including right here in the US.

Russian defence analyst's take on the situation - Russia has been preparing for this since April, and South Ossetians were complicit in agitating to create the current situation.

Says retreat by Georgians is a strategic move by the Georgians to draw sympathy from the west, and claims Russia will invade and capture Saakashvili, put him on trial and imprison him in Siberia.

Interviewer challenges his theory and gets him to clarify his opinion.

Video

From Lateline, ABC Australia current affairs program.

Looks like the guy forgot to turn off his mobile before the interview (Interviewer suspects the KGB is trying to call him...hehe )

Here's a link to a transcript on Australia's ABC Lateline with the analyst from Moscow. Very interesting read!

www.abc.net.au...

PAVEL FELGENHAUER: Well, it's clear right now that the Russian objective is not the small break away regions of Abkhazia and Ossetia, but the entire Georgia.

The fighters and cruise missiles within that fleet could be used effectively from the Persian Gulf, but Amphibious Assault ships would have to go to the Black Sea. I can imagine OPLANs are being drawn up right now involving the Ukraine as a staging area for NATO if everything falls apart.

He's talking about the US instructors that are in Georgia. I would have thought they would have airlifted them out with the planes they brought the Georgian troops home with.

......my thoughts too, but more along the lines of a small tactical nuke or something that will be set off without anyone claiming they are the ones that did it.

woooooooooo one of the best thoughts i've read lately!!!

Imagine if they blamed the nuking of Georgia on Russia, the world blows two tons of fright out of Russia then Bush stays in a few more terms to "stabalize America" in that time Iran becomes a more serious threat....

Or if Georgia used it as a last minute thing and blew themselves to kingdom come to frame Russia taking them out, in the form of WW3 with them.

Damn you have me thinking now D.E.M!!
