The EU commission and chief of NATO are saying that Russia's use of force is excessive, and that they want an immediate halt to hostilities and return to negotiations. This article also touches on the Russian request for an emergency NATO summit.

Extraordinary.

That's all I can say, really.

There is no possibility that Russia will occupy Georgia. It is very difficult to do, and would be catastrophic for Russian economy and politics.

Russia clearly wants a regime change, and has good reasons for wanting it. Saakashvilli has proved his worth when he recklessly attacked S. Ossetia.

Alternatively they could stop in Gori. A control of the major roadways there will severely impede Saakashvilli from running the country effectively.

Medvedev said the same thing about Russian advancement into Georgia about an hour ago...

I don't know what they're planning. I'm not even going to guess anymore.

Seem that the Russian army is indeed in Gori, but still no confirmation from the Russian military.

top.rbc.ru...

I hope they don't destroy's Stalin's house. It's a Georgian national monument. Maybe that's all Russia wanted? Stalin's house where he was born?

According to a Reuters witness, there were no Russian troops in Gori.

TBILISI (Reuters) - A Georgian official said on Monday that Russian forces had captured the Georgian town of Gori, 60 kilometers from the capital Tbilisi, but a Reuters witness saw no troops in the empty town.

"They have captured the city of Gori," the secretary of Georgia's security council, Kakha Lomaia told Reuters by telephone.

A Reuters reporter in Gori said: "We are right now driving through the town and I see no trace of troops or military vehicles. It is absolutely deserted."

So I think we all really need to wait and see for confirmation of this. We need to be objective and keep in mind that it may not be in Georgia or Russia's interests to report the facts to the world accurately as they happen, unfortunate though that may be.

I did say they would not occupy Gori. I was wrong. But the question is will they stay there for long? Is the Georgian army retreating from there? If so we should see them moving through Kaspi and on to Tbilisi soon. If they have retreated from Gori completely it would be kind of pointless for Russians not to go into Gori now.

You dont have to occupy to control. The status-quo was not good for Russia, yet good for the west. Now the soon to be status-quo will be good for Russia and sno so good for the west.

Russia used thier turn and surprised everyone. I dont think anyone was prepared for this move, believing that Russia didnt have the balls to do this.

It would seem too odd that Russian troops would chase the Georgian military right after they captured a city, usually armies leave behind some forces to secure the town before moving on...

I was about to say.

Have they bypassed the city and headed straight for Tbilisi? Perhaps the eyewitness was mistaken - we did see the live footage.

What for? To become targets for the snipers left behind?

They achieved their objective of denying this location for the Georgian command center, and that's good enough.
