NASA conducts full-scale test firing of Orion Jettison Motor




A full-scale rocket motor fires from the Aerojet facility in Sacramento, Calif. The test will help in the development of NASA's orion jettison motor that is being desighned to separate the spacecraft's launch abort system from the crew module during launch.

Speaking of the orion jettison motor this was picture of the day at nasa a few days back.

it looks like a ufo or something but its just a heat shield for the orion crew capsule.

this is what it says about the pic.

"Building Constellation
Boeing engineer Elizabeth Chu inspects the a heat shield demonstration unit developed for NASA's Orion crew capsule, the future spacecraft that will carry astronauts to the International Space Station and eventually to the moon. Boeing was awarded a contract last year to develop a prototype heat shield to protect NASA astronauts from extreme heat during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere upon returning from lunar and low-Earth orbit missions. The work was performed at Boeing facilities in Huntington Beach, Calif.
