Do we really have a choice?

What is choice?

Is it Pepsi or Coke?
Is it white or whole wheat?
Is it apples or pears?
Is it McCain or Obama?

Really, none of these are choices.

Pop or pop.
Bread or bread.
Fruit or fruit.
Status quo or status quo.

While the options available have differences, they are essentially the same in what they are. You can talk about all the differences that exist between Obama and McCain as much as you want... but I put forth the argument that neither presents any "change" over the last 20 or so years of what we've had as a nation.

The things that matter to me... the things that I think are important.

They both represent bigger government. Obama through health care. McCain through military spending.

They both represent a deterioration of our rights. McCain voiced his support for and Obama voted for the FISA immunity bill for Telecoms.

They both see Iran as a threat. (Which I completely and totally disagree with.)

I've not seen either of them talk about our trade deficit, the economy, monetary policy... or a myriad of other things that are important to me.

Sure, Obama wants health care for everyone and McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 10,000 years... but our country will still be the same exact USA that it was before either of them took office.

We can go forward and veer slightly to the right, or slightly to the left. Either way, we are still going down the same path that Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, etc, started us down. Whatever "change" is going to take place over the next few years will not be some renewal of the country, it will not be a significant change to the way things are now. Sure it'll be different, but no more different than white from wheat.

The reason I loved Ron Paul so much as a candidate was that I felt like I finally had something to choose between... Now... not so much.

Is the reason the media hypes up their differences so much only because there are so few differences between the two? Or is it that the media wants you to think that those are the important issues?

If I do vote this year, it'll probably be for Bob Barr.

No, we don't have choice.

We have different parties and lots of politicians to give us the illusion we have choice, but they're all working together on the same side anyway.

I'm really tired of people saying they don't have a choice. I don't believe in not having a choice. There's ALWAYS a choice in any circumstance. All the choices might not be equally attractive, but we always have a choice.

I LIKE coke, whole wheat, apples and Obama. I CAN'T STAND Pepsi, white bread or McCain. Pears are ok. My point is that I see a difference. I have a preference on all of these.

A person's choices are limited to their preferences. Of course if you don't have a preference, then it's not going to matter, but MANY have a preference.

That is yet to be demonstrated and we can't know until we try.

It took us many years to get here. It will take many to turn it around. So, in the next few years, we may not see an about face, but it's possible we will see the beginning of a change of direction. That is what many hope for.

or we can choose a pro war democratic canidate who is sold out to big business.
