In my personal experience final fantasy 7 literally captured me like no other game. I started playing it with NO knowledge of what the game was about. All I had was the game itself, borrowed from a friend who never played the game (got it as a gift). I still remember walking home with the game in hand. It was late june, summertime for the schoolkids. I was 13.

That 2 months of summer I spent more time on my playstation than I ever had playing video games my entire life. (I had been playing since 8-9). Some days it was ALL I did. Most games cant get me to play longer than a week. This game had me play sometimes 8-9 hours in one day. The mere thought of the game make me want to play it.

Better yet, that winter, I got metal gear solid from another friend who, again, never played the game. These games had no hype for me, and they proved themselves beyond all doubt.

GTA4 is the closest thing I have played to one of these capturing games. For a couple weeks it had me REALLY addicted, and it came pretty close to an epic story. Unfortunately, I dont think the story itself had enough depth to become the greatness I wanted. It was rather straightfoward and in your face. The points were pretty simple. I need another EPIC game like final fantasy 7 or Metal Gear Solid, where the story just slaps you and says "you aint seen nothing yet"

Andrew...

I invite you to play Oblivion...

But it for the 360 or the PS3...

That game is GLORIOUS...

Also, COD4 is the best multiplayer game out there right now... Not because it offers something totaly unique, but because thats where everyone is playing... The COD series hasnt changed since its first incarnation, but with modern weapons, people love it...

But check out Oblivion...

Oblivion, in my opinion, is a perfect example of letting the sandbox mentality go too far and destroying a persons drive to play the story. No joke, I got about half way through oblivion and said "Why am I playing this?" and couldnt find ANY reason. I had completely forgotten what the main story was and the side quests were starting to get over done. The sandbox mentality of the game+my ADD= broken gaming.

CoD4 multiplayer is much better on PC than it was on 360 imo, and Im a console oriented gamer. Its story was fun, but after that, CoD4 really isnt worth having for more than a week. A must for rental, but not purchase as the multiplayer simply gets boring fast and the story is good for one play through.

Actually - i did play oblivion.

I guess its the hard head in me that refuses me to open up to it. It was cool, don't get me wrong. But i just... i dunno.

I remember pitting myself in the Colosseum fights at a certain point in the game, and going undefeated, having no idea wtf i was doing. Thats' when i realized i was playing a bad game...

of course thats just my opinion.

Im not trying to say that all the games out there are crap.
They're very sucessful games, and fittingly so.

Im just saying i havent seen anything like what i grew up with.

Someone needs to give me a new rendition of Punch Out!
Someone needs to give me a remake of the original zelda, and for God sakes!!! keep the birds eye perspective (why the *snip* does everything have to be Resident Evil, over the shoulder 3d these days?)

I want to see a new star fox like the ones i enjoyed back in the day. Where you still fought things in your space ship (unlike the most recent release that has fox running around on foot)

I want a remake of Blaster Master.

Release some more games for Virtual Boy. Since i got ripped off and can't get them anymore (still have the V.B. in the attic somewhere :shk: )

For me - video games are about nostalgia.

I loved playing World of warcraft and picking up on all the "original zelda" references in Nagrand and Un'goro crater.

I dunno.

I guess my thirst will never be quenched.
Could it be that games like that live on in our memories, and only by means of 'nostalgia' do they continue to be successful? Could a remake destroy them?

Who knows.

But i do know im sick and tired of madden 99, 2000, 2001, 2002, etc. Its the same damn game.

The same game.

The same game.

The same game.

Over and over and over and over and over and over again, and it has me loopy

But what i really want to see, more than any other game, is another Super Mario RPG.

That game rocked!!

I just finished installing FFXI - and plan on taking a trip through memory lane....so far so good

But there's still something missing.

Long gone are the days of the shock and amazement when you found that Samus Aran was actually a chick.

Gone are the days of finding out that the princess is in a DIFFERENT castle.

And when games didnt have to tell you the main characters blood type and sexual preference in order to be enjoyable.

i guess im done ranting now......

The next XBOX will be realesed in 2012/13
The next Playstation will be realesed In dun dun dun..2012/13

you still have a long time to play these, and there will be hundreds of games till then. There is no fear of instantly beign outdated, if you buy a new xbox or ps3

alough i suspect that nintendo are thinking about the new wii, probably with something like the 360s graphics and i suspect the games will be in hd.

fear of these "next gen" consoles being outdated wasnt the issue

The games that have already become outdated are.

THe games that built the video game industry got left behind like some old ninja turtle action figure in the basement of your moms house.

Not that i condone adults playing with action figures, but i think you get my drift

Contra on the 360 is blah.

I want the NES one. You know, the one with the crappy graphics and flickering sprites.

Also of note about the whole "history of video games" post... games in the arcade weren't really made to be beaten. Heck, most of them didn't have an definitive end level, just bugs that prevented you from playing any further. But that's not the point, the point is they were made to chomp quarters. Designing a game to turn a profit for the arcade owner, and designing a game for a home console that needs to sell 10 million copies to break even lead to two COMPLETELY different design tactics.

And video games were very much mainstream. Even the home consoles in the early 80s were mainstream. Part of the reason the home console industry collapsed is because there was WAY too much out there in terms of games, and game systems. And a good portion of it was garbage (i.e. E.T. for the 2600). The industry just couldn't sustain itself.

In the history of video games the arcade market and home market followed two distinct, but somewhat dependent paths, that were not necessarily effected by the same social and economic pressures.

I have the same prob... I had every system since Atari, I only on the 360 for this gen. I find my self getting bored with the games. Every now and then I get excited a bout a game, but when I had my PS2 I seemed to get a game every week and play the hell out of it. On the 360 I get a game every once in a while, nothing out to get excited about, if there is I have played it.
