We already have a crowd here who believes the "Matrix" movie is real. Now we will need a new Forum for those who think that this Batman movie is brainwashing us somehow? You are just joking right? Or, are you really that far down the rabbit hole?

I've been spending less time on ATS lately. I'm more cheerful and I think clearer. I've never been to the level of what is happening on this thread though.

I think if I were looking for some sort of government brainwashing in entertainment, I'd look at children's programs. I just don't trust that Sponge Bob character as far as I could throw him.

As I recall from my film class, movies are stocked with symbolism. We couldn't watch a film without my instructor pausing it about every minute to point out symbolism and hidden meanings. This is for artful purposes, not brainwashing, well not intentionally anyway. Some directors will push their own beliefs into their films, so I guess brainwashing is still debatable.
It did seem at times that the director of The Dark Knight did have a thing for Bush, but like others have pointed out, that could just be because of Batman's character. They coincidentally may have a few similarities. As for the big brother part, I have a theory on how the director thought about that one. I think he was against it, and here's why:

Batman became so obsessed with finding the Joker by spying on him with cell phones that he missed the Joker's real plan, to destroy Harvey Dent. Maybe if Batman had stuck to his old fashioned ways, he would have figured that out.

I could be wrong on that though, it's just a theory.

(edit - Also, Batman's cell phone spying was his version of Alfred's "burning the forest down", which doesn't sound like a positive thing.)

(extra edit - when I said films are stocked with symbolism, I meant "real films", not the films that are made for a quick buck.)

All i have to say is there is a lot of that going on in movies... batman is not the only one... I mean look at Iron man... that movie is making Arabs look like all they do in their spare time is terrorize!

But there are a lot of movies that tell us a bit of propaganda, lies, or truth. This is part of the entertainment business. Let’s also not forget that it is another form of communication as well. Right out in the open.

Just a few movie/TV titles that have deeper meanings are:

Lord of the rings
Star wars
Matrix
Star gate
Close encounters of the third kind
Contact
Outer limits
X-men trilogy

The list can go on!

In summation, we should just remember that the only truth comes from inside our selves and we have to take any out side information with a grain of salt!

Much love and thank you all for continuing to post topics that continues the development of the human consciousness.

I saw it last night and was more dismayed by the fact that the film that is well on its way to being the biggest b.o. hit in history -- eclipsing Titanic at this rate -- was so misanthropic.

I couldn't figure out if the massive appeal is due in large part to Heath or simply that everyone embraces that bleak, hopeless view as 'true to life' and was glad to see it in a superhero blockbuster.

Thoughts?

Is it really so evil to monitor people if it means saving lives? I bet if the Joker had killed you, then you would be wishing, in your final agonizing moments, that Batman HAD monitored things now wouldn't you? Honestly, sometimes I just don't get why people feel that control is more important than LIFE. Without life, there is no control.

Still waiting for the evidence..

Like I said, I believe there IS other life, but making statements of aliens eating children is a hard one to swallow without something to back it up.

Some body talking on a video is not the same thing.

I mean good lord.. i can say i have an alien living in my basement, then pay some "scientist" to back me up.. does that make it true?

We are a see it before we believe it nation.. thats just the way it is, regardless of how many links you can come up with.

If you pay a scientist to 'back you up' it would be true. Just look at global warming. Dozens of scientists have been paid to 'back up' Al Gore and his minions, and many millions of people have accepted what they have said or written as gospel.

One of my personal statements is that there are many forms of truth... only one set of FACTS. Strip away the emotion, strip away the pride/patriotism/etc., put in place logic and reasoned thought, and you should arrive at the facts in no time at all.

As for 'seeing before believing' nation, which nation are you refering to? America, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, Russia, Zimbabwe?

People are repeaters. They do not have to see something to believe it. Often what will happen is that a person will hear something from another that they percieve to be 'authoritative'. When that happens the information becomes 'truth' and is repeated as such.

Just recently I tested this hypothesis. I told several of my friends and acquaintances that the County Council elections for 2009 in the UK had been cancelled by order of the EU, because they were deemed to be a waste of time and money with such low turnouts. This made all of them quite angry, and one immediately told me that he was going to be 'dealing with the issue as soon as he had chance'. The reason that these people got so emotional about this, has several reasons:
1) They feel strongly about the EU.
2) They know that a 'low turnout' in the case of County elections is not the case for the county I live in.
3) They know I am standing for election next year, and as such would have a much better knowledge of the event than most people.

As such, this proved that people simply take what they are told by others and assume it is truth... then it is repeated.

No one, repeat no one, ever verifies their information any more. No one ever hears something and thinks to themselves 'I shall have to find out more about this later on'....

Do you see the point now?

I have said for years that SpongeBob has oddly shapped shorts for the simple reason that he has an RGP stuffed into them, and perhaps several pistols in the pockets.

I would not trust him as far as I could throw him... something in the eyes doesn't sit right with me.

Back on topic, some films are just that... FILMS. They have nothing to do with propaganda, or brainwashing.

I do admit that there are times when the government helps to push a particular message, such as with global warming, but I cannot subscribe to the level of propaganda you suggest is in film. It just cannot happen without someone blowing the whistle now and again...

One of my more paranoid friends observed the film and came to the same conclusion as the poster of this thread. He nearly walked out but it was so close to the end. The its OK for us to big brother spy on people for this one instance for this crazy terrorist meme can not be denied as it is part of the sub plot of the movie but was it intentional and was this directed by the unseen hand is the question?

I think it was not but my friend said it was so I guess it is much like this thread divided into the 2 party system.

To make my point, I will ask a question.

If any of you were in Batman's position, and had his resources...what would you have done given the circumstances?

Exactly. And anyone comparing Batman to Bush must be mad...Batman is in no way like Bush. Why? Because, my friend, Batman does not have evil intent. Take a good long look at this show...carefully. Watch EVERYTHING...and I do mean EVERYTHING! What do you see? Look again, watch it closely, listen...and pay close attention. If all you got was that their is subliminal pushing for mass surveilance, then you are a very shallow, face-value-seeing drone.

I saw the film today, and I think it's quite good.

During the ferry scene, I loved the droll line where the captain of one vessel tried to hail the other (a ship named "Liberty") with the dialogue: "Liberty, are you there?", and when he was greeted by silence over the com, he continued "...it's dead."

That's not an endorsement of Bush's policies.

There's a very relevant (and scathing) editorial about the subject of this thread in the recent issue of Variety (the trade magazine for Hollywood's film industry). You can check it out here:

So you really think that the government would destroy it aswell? Isn`t it obvious that in the movie it`s destroyed exactly for people to say "See, nothing wrong here"?

The illuminati may have been a good organization at some point. However the Bavarian sect which was started by Adam Weisshaupp in 1776 and thrown out of Bavaria and Germany was thrown out not because they were helping the poor but because they were undermining the country and its people. The illuminati is enlightened your right about that but they are consolodating and hiding that knowledge.

1. You've obviously never read the comics, which were around long before W, and our current "big brother." The concept of that computer was introduced long ago in the comics.

2. It's just a movie. This type of over-anaylization is the kind of thing that usually leads to censorship. "Oh my god! Those people are smoking in a movie, and that's going to make my kids want to smoke! - Oh my god! That super-hero's car is phallis-shaped! They must be promoting sex!" "Oh my god! The computer in Batman is desensitizing our youth to accept massive surveillance by the government!"

- Really....are you serious or just fear mongering? Maybe you're taking advantage of this site's conspairacy thematic and exploiting it for points?

Get a life and stop fear-mongering. Let entertainment be just that - entertainment. I saw the movie and you know what? I thought that the message you were SUPPOSED to take with you was that that kind of technology is BAD.

It was very obvious that many things in the movie were pure propaganda:

"Some men just want to see the world burn" means "The ebil terrorists who wants to hurt America".

The surveillance thing means "Spying is OK as long as the good guys are doing it."

The movie is one big simplification of the issues down to a kids level. For a movie, it was OK. The Joker owned the movie.

For a reality check, its craptastic.

For a conspiracy site, there sure are alot of conspiracy-skeptics around here!

If any conclusions and answers are going to be found, they will only happen through keeping an open mind. Many have already put forward great examples of propaganda and brainwashing through film/television, who is to say that Batman movies (directed by Christopher Nolan or not) are exempt from this?

Now, on the contrary, there needs to be a point when a person can step back and examine whether they have gone too far with the theories, or whether it is a reasonable cause for concern. Being the duality-loving Libra that I am, I'm looking at both sides here. There would be good reason to conclude that there is some amount of brainwashing going on here, however, the question then arises, who would be responsible for this? Is Chris Nolan being paid off to incorprate propoganda into his work? Is WB taking the dive? Research is good.
Then again, perhaps there is no brainwashing involved, and we are all just a little too creeped out for our own good. When is the line drawn? when can a film be considered creative, and simply use ideas, no matter how suggestive to our future we think they might be?

Should people like our fine selves be on the lookout for everything, coming out of every corner, at any time? If not, then how should we be measuring our concerns? I say, if we are not questioning our surroundings, then we are fools. Movies, afterall, among other things, are not designed to better the population... they are designed to get our money, in any way possible. Why NOT incorporate some propoganda? They are getting their money either way.

Anyway, I'd trust Morgan Freeman with the controls, if I had to.

If you feel that way, why is nearly everything they do nearly a secret, depite how influential to society their decisions will be? Most people have no idea that things like the Federal Reserve Bank is a privately held institution, and is not a government institution. Studying how private central banks around the world came to be, and how they use mass media to keep the general populace entertained and distracted, you might begin to see the larger picture coming into view. Believe me, I was a sceptic at first myself, but after first researching various information about the dissinformation campaign regarding September 11th, and the real truth being pushed aside, I began my search for personel truth. I'm convinced that once you see some of what I have seen, you will change your mind. My personel video recomendations (among others are): www.zeitgeistmovie.com, www.infowars.com, and going onto www.youtube.com and viewing both Ring of Power, and The Money Masters.
