THIRTY-NINE years to the day after Neil Armstrong radioed "The Eagle has landed!" from the Sea of Tranquility, NASA has turned its eyes toward the moon, gazing both forward and backward in time.

For the next three days, Silicon Valley will be the base for planning humankind's return to the moon, as more than 400 scientists from around the world assemble at NASA's Ames Research Center for a conference on what type of science should be done when astronauts revisit Earth's nearest neighbor.

It could happen in the decade after NASA retires the space shuttle in 2010 and begins flying a new generation of rocket booster. And it won't be a temporary visit, NASA officials and scientists said Sunday.

Very interesting article on humans going back to the moon for good. But NASA was worried about long term exposure to the radiation in space no that long ago? What has changed?

They also would like to set up a radio telescope on the dark side of the moon will they be able to see more from the dark side?

Maybe they are going up there to terraform the moon, hence why they will be up there for 50 years. Would be crazy, but I believe we're on the verge of deep-space exploration.

This isn't breaking news! They announced this in the sixties!

Pretty plausible, the Chinese are launching their first manned moon mission in July next year to search for Helium 3, the US, India and EU plans are also for launch in the next decade, also mainly for Helium 3.
New sources of water make it easier to make a long term base and craters will give good protection against radiation

They also would like to put a liquid metal telescope up there cos it would work well with the whole no atmosphere thing (Oh I miss John Lear and his moon atmosphere baloney )

As regards the 'dark' side that is the wrong term, - far side is much better as it gets just as much sun as the near side, guess the real reason would be this big old lump of rock (Earth) would take up a large portion of the image all the time - I'm always amazed that the moon is locked in to it's orbit so perfectly, it's kinda odd.

Am I misunderstanding what you said that the Chinese are sending a manned mission to the moon next year? Are they going to land on it or just go around and set themselves an orbit? Thanks for the info as I had not heard they are to do this.
