I saw this article while I was at work today, and had to wait to post about it.

There have been many threads that have already detailed the fallacy of the Democrats argument that we can just magically switch to alternative energy, (see bio-fuel fiasco and the ensuing ecological and food price impact that resulted, also see my thread here, www.abovetopsecret.com... for reasons why their dreams are just that.) that they will not allow drilling, (Semerfortis has some great threads on this, like this one, www.abovetopsecret.com... ).

Anyway, I know that we all saw the impact that Bush had on the oil futures market when he lifted the off-shore drilling ban. I admit like all others that this was merely a psychological effect, yet it did produce a three day dive at the market. This makes Bush look good, and got the populace screaming at Congress top lift the ban.

So what does the Democratic majority decide to do? They release their plans to raise the gas tax by at least ten cents per gallon. Now this should have no impact on the price of Oil futures, as the tax is miniscule when you compare the price of gas, and where this tax is added on. But what it DID do, more than anything, was reverse the trend that Bush started.

So why did they choose that day to release those studies? The Republicans already said that their reasoning for not passing previous bills was their concern for the earmarks attached. Now, when Oil is plummeting, the democrats release POSSIBLE tax increase information. Why not just wait a week or two, let the slide continue?

Because Bush would get points, and Congress would continue to look bad.

Here is the article, and I look forward to being ignored by the left, once again.
news.yahoo.com...

Congress should first reduce spending on pet projects, known as earmarks, argued Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. "I'm not going to let the Senate spend all this money when nobody is looking, especially when we refuse to stop wasting billions of taxpayer dollars on earmarks."

Oberstar, D-Minn., said his committee is working on the next long-term highway bill. He estimated it will take between $450 billion and $500 billion over six years to address safety and congestion issues with highways, bridges and transit systems.

"We'll put all things on the table," Oberstar said, but the gas tax "is the cornerstone. Nothing else will work without the underpinning of the higher user fee gas tax."

Actually, lowering the overall price of gas would raise revenue as more people would use it.

Just more proof that the Democrats will destroy anything and anyone to make the Republicans look bad, and achieve more power...

It is a simple fact, and this just further confirms it, that the Democrat/Socialists have no stance other that that against the Republicans.

They will eventually destroy us to get what they want. The really sad thing is so many are supporting them in doing this..

Wow, this blows my mind...yet I'm not at all surprised. Aren't these the same democrats that ran on the "lower gas cost" platform in 2006?? Here's what Pelosi said back then:

With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to Republican big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.
“With record gas prices, record CEO pay packages, and record oil company profits, Speaker Hastert and the Majority Congress continue to give the American people empty rhetoric rather than join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.
“Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices by cracking down on price gouging, rolling back the billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and increasing production of alternative fuels.”

Pelosi - With Skyrocketing gas prices...

So now apparently they've decided that the best way to LOWER gas prices is to RAISE the gas tax by 10 cents?? Can somebody please explain the logic here?

The three of us all know that there is not a single intelligent argument for the other side. Therefor, it seems to me like those that know this is more partisan crap, and preach to be above it, will avoid this thread.

And those that usually deal in rhetoric will avoid any thread that isn't obviously ludicrous.

Why do Democrats put up with their leaders?

Is it because they pander to your special interest groups?

Isn't that the same reason you all lament the Republicans and the Christian right?

Anyone that can't see the Dems are on a socialist rampage to give us the New Deal that Roosevelt wanted in the 40's is blind or doesn't know the true history of the Socilist Democratic movement. It used to be that the Dems where the conservatives, but no body seems to remember that. Its only recently that some in the movement have felt comfortable enough to jam it down our throats. The elites in the upper echelons of the Democratic party have snowed the common man for the last 50 years and the slow inevitable progress they've made has been under the radar of the old party guard. They need to wake up and truly examine the roots of the now mainstream Dem party. Reread Marx and compare the planks in the party line to what was his view of what his world and everbody elses should be. It just might scare you enough to look for another third party and kick the snot out of the movement. Its almost too late but not quite!!!

Well said Zindo.

But it seems the press is too obsessed with following Obama playing B-ball with some troops to actually handle anything real.
We are living in scary times friends, scary times.

If only the left didn't have Bush to blanket the party with, then they might have to answer for their own policies.

Earmarks with Democratic Senators is rampid.

It follows the same equation:

Foreign-owned, yet domestic based business approaches Democrat Senator to help get said business government funding. The Democrat Senator is promised kickbacks from the Earmarks supplied by Congress for that company's project.

Factor this into the nationwide mortgage scandals by Democrat Senators and you got an economic downswing. Personally, these Senators get increased income, but the public sees the repurcussions for this greed.

Both parties are corrupt, but when it comes to selling out Americans and their freedoms, Democrats do it like no other.

Here is some interesting additional information...

"Top 100 Democrat Broken Promises"

A few excerpts

Promise: “Democrats are for the rule of law, we want to get border security right. . .We would do what’s necessary to protect our borders ...” – Then-House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Press Release, December 15, 2005

Broken Promise: Just six months after Democrats took power in the House, 214 House Democrats voted against a Republican proposal to “provide the funds necessary for the construction of at least two layers of reinforced fencing, the installation of additional physical barrier, roads, lighting, cameras, and sensors

Promise: “[Democrats want to]...destroy terrorist networks like al Qaeda...” – Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) “A New Direction for America,” Page 5

Broken Promise: During their first six months in power, Democratic leaders tried repeatedly to stop U.S. forces from engaging in military operations against al Qaeda in Iraq, even contradicting statements made by America’s generals in the field

Promise: “Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices…join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.” – Then-Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, April 19, 2006

Broken Promise: “The average price of gasoline hit $3.218 a gallon Monday, up a stunning 11.5 cents the past week and just half a penny shy of the inflation-adjusted record, the government reported. The average is almost certain this week to pass the inflation-adjusted high of $3.223, recorded in May 1981

Promise: Then-Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised, in response to a reporter’s question, that House Democrats would not raise taxes on middle-class families:

Broken Promise: “Democrats also put their stamp on managing the country’s finances with [a budget] effectively resulting in the largest tax increase in history.” – “Report Card; Sound, Fury Outweigh Substance So Far,” The Oklahoman Editorial, April 2, 2007. The Democrats’ budget includes a tax hike of at least $217 billion by fiscal year 2012, and includes a tax hike “trigger” that would reimpose the marriage penalty and cut the child tax credit in half, tax hikes that would have a direct impact on middle-class families.

100 Broken Promises

There are of course many more, these are but a sampling...

The site is good reading... If your interested in the truth of course...

Since no Obama supporters are responding, i'll respond with their "typical" response.

It usually involves emotional appealment thus thwarting facts and logic to the wayside:

*****

Oh yeah, well, Bush and his cronies have done alot worse. We are spending billions on war we shouldn't even be in. He lied to us, there were no WMDs in Iraq.

Most Americans are probably willing to pay the small increase in taxes, including the gas tax. You have to sacrafice a little if you want Universal Healthcare, silly! It just won't pay for itself.

Oh, and it is our responsibility to feed the world and solve the world poverty issue. We make the most money and should share and share alike! It is only fair.

*******

Dam, think i'll stick to facts and logic I guess.

There are many facts one could use to tear apart that statement. I will stick to the most basic. Unless you are implying that the Congress of the United States was influenced by white house press conferences, then the fact remains that Congress overwhelmingly voted in favor of this war using the VERY SAME EVIDENCE provided to the Executive branch. THe fact that WMDs were not found have nothing to do with the prewar intelligence provided to justify said war.

There are many viable theories as to what happened to these WMDs that we knew they had, they had records of having, and yet are also missing.... hmmm...

Plus, what does Bush and his war have to do with the voting records of the Dems. Stay on topic please...

The tax in question addresses infrastructure requirements, which have ballooned enormously since the democrats took over and began attaching earmarks.
Plus, this tax is counter productive. It basically says, that we are using less gas, and need to raise more revenue. This tax will lesson use, and require yet MORE taxes.
Since these taxes are based on gallons, and not prices, helping lower the gas price would actually stimulate more revenue.
Besides, this thread is about how the timing of the announcement killed a downward spiral of oil futures prices.

Oh, and it is our responsibility to feed the world and solve the world poverty issue. We make the most money and should share and share alike! It is only fair.

We are the largest donors in the world. By both Government grants and loans and donations, and private organizations and personal donations. Get your facts straight.

Maybe we should just start holding the world accountable for the donations we do hand out. Seems to me we should make sure it is used where it is needed....

Did anyone else notice the title of the article in question?

"Gas Tax holiday faltered over job losses"

If that were an ATS thread, it would have gotten a quick mod edit for misleading titles...

You guys all having fun with your little sausage fest*? I think the reason no one is arguing with you is because they all realize how ludicrous this argument is.

Wake up guys, both republicans and democrats have thrown the common man under the bus. Get used to it.

* Sausage Fest - a collusion of like minded individuals all patting each other on the back for things they all agree upon to begin with.

I suppose its our fault that no one from the other side is bothering to try and show us how we are wrong? Seems to me that its not so much that we are patting each other on the back as much as agreeing with the premis of the post and the other side doesn't care to debate. You've managed, in a politicaly correct way, to call us D**k heads but no one has yet to prove that what we think and post is wrong? Just that most here agree.

Well the big difference is that the Dems continually try to portray themselves as fighting for the common man, and the Republicans being for big business.

The Dems have been bought and sold by the alternative energy conglomerates. It started in Iowa with pandering to the corn farmers re ethanol production. The Dems MUST make the price of gas high so their alternative energy buddies can cash in on their venture cap investments.

Are you suggesting that Republicans portray themselves as those whom "Toss the common man under the bus" and as such, it is ok when they do it?

This is pathetic guys, you are even arguing with your selves over "made up" responses that you would anticipate from the liberals.

I know you guys are drill happy, and that is fine. There is a lot one can argue about the benefits to that, but to think that by drilling off shore here in the US will miraculously make oil prices drop is not only naive, but also shows a lack of understanding as to how the oil market works. Just because there is more oil, as this market has shown time and time again, does not mean that oil prices will drop.

Now, let's say we do drill here in the US. Sure, oil prices may go down somewhat, but what do we do when all of that oil is gone?

The lower the oil prices go , the less motivation there is to seek tangible, soluble alternatives that must be found in order to sustain our civilization for the long term.

You wanna talk about throwing the common man under the bus?

Is it a mere coincidence that as soon as 2 "oil men" took over the white house that gas prices have increased nearly 3 times? Does $4.30 gas NOT have implications on the "common man"?

Patently NOT TRUE..

As you can see here:

Gas Price History

Gas prices went significantly up when the Democrats took control of the House and Senate.

Your statements are not factual.

Everyones attempt at "Lumping" the Republicans and the Democrats into the same "pot" is all fun and really "cool" and keeps everyone on the same politically correct side here at ATS, but it is based almost entirely on emotions, hyperbole and opinion; completely ignoring facts.
