What's worse Zorgon, is now google has just launched it's own satellite "GeoEye" and the pictures will be in higher res now, updated monthly.

GeoEye Inc said it successfully launched into space on Saturday its new GeoEye-1 satellite, which will provide the U.S. government, Google Earth users and others the highest-resolution commercial color satellite imagery on the market.

Google Eye

Yes it does PISS me off, it's a complete invasion of privacy, what's next, live shots? Camera's looking straight through your windows? In your home? I really don't care about Govt snapping pics, they can track you anyways, but it shouldn't be available to the general public. Why should some creep or nosey person get to find out and look at where I live, and who's parked in my driveway or whatever I'm doing in the privacy of my back yard? It isn't just a case if they had your address anyways, it's that they can get your address from other sites on the net, then look.

Well it seems that the Department of Defense agrees with us on this issue

Google Pulls Army Base Maps, Says Photographer Violated Policy

By Nathan Eddy, ChannelWeb
2:25 PM EST Fri. Mar. 07, 2008

Since its debut in May 2007, the Google (NSDQ:GOOG) Maps feature "Street View" has been the target of controversy. This time, the Department of Defense is calling on Google to remove certain images from Street View, citing fears that some photographs could endanger U.S. military bases. Google removed the images within 24 hours of the notice, the company said.

www.crn.com...

USNORTHCOM stepped in with a blanket memo after they became aware of the issue after high-resolution images taken at Fort Sam Houston. "It actually shows where all the guards are. It shows how the barriers go up and down. It shows how to get in and out of buildings," General Gene Renuart, commander of U.S. Northern Command, told Reuters. "I think that poses a real security risk for our military installations."

Lt. Colonel John Cornelio, a spokesman for USNORTHCOM, says they acted independently of the Pentagon, despite what numerous news media outlets reported. "We are under the DoD (Department of Defense) structure, so using 'the Pentagon' is one way of saying it" he said. "But the U.S. Northern Command has a force protection responsibility in the United States, and it became a force protection issue."

Well how about that?

The Government pissed off at their own tech snooping on THEM

Hi guys,

This has just launched in London in the UK. I see that this thread was made in July '08 so must have launched much earlier in the US?

Well, I am relatively concerned. I think that it is an invasion as it can see into homes (if the curtains are open). I see that it block out number plates, but what else will come to light that has not been blocked out?

Pretty cool. How do they do it?

Cheers

Once upon a time a P.I. was needed for this type of information. Now any yahoo with a computer can find you.
Lessee, what was that kids name I used to pick-on in 6th grade. I may need to stage a pre-emptive strike.

Good God, I just found my nephew i haven't seen since he was two.

I don't understand the problem really. You can't find someones house just from looking at a picture of a street on the internet, you have to have the address right? And if you have the address then you could find it easily enough without streetview. Pizza delivery guys and couriers do it all day at work and none of them could be considered rocket scientists (no offence to either, both are a valuable service to pizza loving ebay freaks like me!).

Facebook, Myspace etc are much bigger invasions of peoples privacy, and most people are on there voluntarily. We should all be more worried about the government/nwo working up basic psychological profiles of us and tracking our movements through social networking than creepy stalkers being able to find out the colour of your front door. Surely there is nothing on streetview you can't see by just walking down the street yourself.

Google StreetView launched Thursday in the UK and my house is clearly visible. In school one of my friends is on streetview because he was looking out of his windows when the Google Guys came down

Well at least he wasn't with your girlfriend...

Imagine something like that happening?

Actually it did

Also this...

Google Earth captures drunken man passing out on kerb

When this drunken Aussie was shaken awake by police he prayed none of the neighbours had seen him collapsed on the kerb.

Unfortunately millions could gaze at his slumped form.

For at the moment he passed out, Google's Street View camera car was filming in that corner of Melbourne.

So whenever users of the internet mapping tool looked up his street, they saw him.

And the man - identified only as Bill, 46, - is not happy.

I don't see the big deal honestly. So there are pictures of every road/every structure in major metro areas available for download. What? You don't want someone to LQQK at your house? If so, they why have you never been concerned about every single vehicle/pedestrian that has passed your residence since the moment you moved in. I just don't see a threat.

So I see my driveway with my 2 vehicles. So I see my back yard with my BBQ grill. OH NO, now I'm in eminent danger. Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

Something creepy just happened to me.
I went to Google, searched for zabasearch. The second I hit the enter key I got a call from a restricted number. I have an account on "Trapcall" set up so I can see restricted numbers, but it didn't seem to work.

It might be a coincidence, but it seemed too well timed.

Google Street View takes down pictures of vomiting Brit

Couldn't Google's use of someone's picture on their Street View service be considered a commercial use requiring a signed consent form?

Being in a rural area, it's really rather creepy to find MULTIPLE views of your home on Google Earth. The internet has opened wide the doors to find nearly anyone you want with only a few pieces of information.

If you have an address, you can view their home.

If you have a phone number, you can punch that into Zabasearch.

Basically, this is saving a lot of money and gas.

As will anything else, there are benefits and bad things about it. It remains to be seen.
