View on schizophrenia

My view on schizophrenia is a spiritual. schizophrenia is a very complex "gift". Schizophrenia (pronounced /ˌskɪtsəˈfriːniə/), from the Greek roots schizein (σχίζειν, "to split") and phrēn, phren- (φρήν, φρεν-, "mind"). From that definition see what it says. "Split Mind". Could this mean that people with schizophrenia can see in both worlds of reality that other people can not see. I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and sometimes I feel like I am in another place and I want to say another "time". What is you thoughts on this.

I worked with schizophrenics once upon a time, and I think their condition is probably one of the most misunderstood of all mental illnesses. Most people seem to confuse it with multiple personality disorders, which couldn't be further from the truth. Most people think of schizophrenics as being dangerous which isn't true. In reality, they pose more of a danger to themselves than to others due to delusional thinking or auditory or visual hallucinations.

Of the patients I worked with, I found them to be on the average, extremely intelligent people. Some had flattened or inappropriate affects however, which made conversing with them a bit difficult, but not impossible.

Most people simply won't take the time to work past these issues, and instead wish to further medicate them to the point of incapacity, which is a shame in my opinion.

I don't know about the spiritual aspects of the disorder, but I tended to feel it was more of a malfunctioning of the brain to filter out extraneous feedback. I also thought they could possibly be peope with uncontrolled telepathic abilities.

Maybe the voices they were hearing were actually other peoples thoughts, and they just couldn't shut them off voluntarily. That's just a theory though, with no scientific foundation to support it..

One medication I did see prescribed, which seemed to work wonders, was Clozaril. The results were almost immediate. The drawback to the drug was it required a lot of expensive blood work to be done on a regular basis, and not everyone was a candidate for it's use due to some serious side effects.

I wish you the best though, and encourage you too take all prescribed medication. Don't be afraid to tell your doctor though, if you experience any unpleasant side effects. Often it's simply a dosage related issue or the effects of several medications that do not work well together.These issues are correctable.

KillerKid, my view of schizophrenia is similar to yours. I have always felt that schizophrenics could see things that others couldn't. I am no expert on the subject, but that has always been my inclination.

LLoyd thats what I think to is that schizophrenia is uncontrolled physic things. I am very intelligent in certain things, History, Science, Computer technology. My friends told me that they are a bit nervous around me because they think I might "Freak out". I told them don't treat me different from other people. I read that only 1% of people have schizophrenia in the USA. That is smaller than any other illness I can think of. It is a terrible thing to have when you can never ever turn it off if you are untreated but you will still have the chance of symptoms even if you are being treated. But schizophrenia medication is nothing more than a strong tranquilizer. Which dulls the brain and slows it down. Maybe the government knows something about schizophrenia that they are not telling us. During the Nazi era. The Scientist were conduction things we have no knowledge of till this day. They could of been studying mental illness ect.

Unfortunately KK, that tends to be human nature to mock or fear things we don't understand. I never found the majority of schizophrenics I worked with frightening or scary. Some of their behavior was bizarre, but I've seen much worse on the streets.

Schizophrenics are just like anyone else in my opinion. Once you take the time to really get to know them, they're not that different from anyone else. We all have strange friends ,relatives, and acquaintances that we still like and share a deep affection for.

The prevalence rate is rather low, and I think that's why the disorder is so misunderstood. Many are hospitalized or cared for by their families, and are therefore not rarely seen by the general public except in extreme cases. Movies like "Psycho" also tend to make the image problem worse. Untrained laymen tend to lump all mental illness together.

Neuroleptics like Mellaril, Haldol, Risperdal, and Thorazine are really just heavy duty tranquilizers as you've said. The problem isn't really the medications themselves, but their abuse by the medical community. Rather than addressing the problem they sedate the patient.

A lot of the medical information we have today did come out of the Nazi experiments conducted on Jewish prisoners, and i'm sure some of the results have been withheld for one reason or another.

Schizophrenia fascinates me. I would love to have access to schizophrenics and be allowed to interview as many as I could. I think there is a lot to it that mainstream medicine is probably wrong about.

I always found them fascinating to talk to, and I seemed to have a natural rapport with them. I think they liked me because I didn't show fear of them, and I actually made an effort to understand what they were saying.

Hi Killerkid,

This is something I have always thought and I don't even have the illness (though my mother's 1st husband did).

My job is reading Tarot cards (no smickers please). I am what some would call "sensitive" or "intuitive" and I have made some "psychic" predictions through my work that have come true.
We are all energy fields essentially, and I ALWAYS know when a person is on a similar intuitive/psychic vibration to me, ie I can "recognize" people who have a skill, gift , talent or empathy for things psychic/intuitive. It just seeps out of their energy field and I feel a rapport for that person, an affinity. I have had the strongest sense of this connection through 2 schizophrenics I have been around more than anyone else, ever.

I think perhaps in schizophrenia, the normal "filtering mechanisms" are absent, so there is this uncontrollable (?) connection to dimensions/realities/sights/beings not ordinarilly seen. Perhaps also is a increased and involuntary ability to tune into the wavelengths of discarnate beings, ie people who have died, "crossed over" into other planes. It's like a fabulous gift but terrible nemesis all at the same time for the sufferer.

I've read some material on the possible link between multiple personality disorder and spirit attachments too- fascinating stuff to ponder.

I think Schizophrenia is literally 2 minds in one body. Same as what happens with twins, except no body or brain is grown just 2 minds in one vessel

I have had a Schizoprenic in my life and...

Honestly the person could read my mind, I sometimes feel guilty because I had to deny things I actually did think and the person kept pinning them right on the nose

The person wan't crazy and I suppose that happens to alot of people with the condition, people just deny it when they read our awful thoughts...

sad but a true story

I inquired a former co-worker who worked with skitzos in the past- I was extremely interested to see if they were actually crazy or misunderstood.

She said the best case was one girl who appeared perfectly normal.
While she talked to my co-worker she was looking in a mirror. The girl was supposedly looking at her "wings" and was "opening them and closing them".
She explained how "crazy it sounds to say what I'm doing, but I see my wings in the mirror..."
