I've noticed when driving a vehicle and I have the radio on AM, and I have my cell phone in the car, Once every ~30 mins (varies) there will
be a sound similiar to the "gallop of a horse" (best analogy I can find) for about 3 seconds. It is a loud static sound that drowns out any signal out the radio.

Does it have anything to do with the cell phone roaming or picking up some interference?

Any ideas appreciated.

See this thread.

It pretty much explains it all in there.

Yeah, that "thud thud thud" noise IS your cellphone. It's connecting from tower to tower, performing what some call a "handshake".

You will notice a similar effect during an incoming call.

When I used to have Nextel I dealt with this all the time. Weird noises would come through the car radios, computer speakers and other audio devices.

It would happen during outgoing calls, prior to and during incoming calls, and when going in and out of service.

AM radio is more subject to interference in general though...

Understandably, as AM frequencies are very near most of the cell frequencies used by most network types.

Remember back when UHF TV stations used to have interference problems with AM radio stations?

Well, UHF was abandoned to make way for more cell networks.

VHF is soon to go as well.
