It sounds like this is the beginning of something even greater for the United States. I don't think that N. Korea will give up its weapons programs, and I doubt that the United States will pull out its troops from S. Korea.

I think that it will perhaps be a while, though, before N. Korea is eventually attacked.

How many days would the U.S. have to close Wal-mart in order for the Chinese to rein in their puppet? - my guess is 60, It might be cheaper to cover the payroll of the employees at Wal-mart than to fight war or keep a high profile military presence on the Korean peninsula - besides the money would go right back into our economy anyways.

From the CNN story,
"North Korea has said it is willing to give up its nuclear program in return for energy and economic aid".

We need nukes to show the world "we're the all powerful." Interesting how we keep threatening other countries to give up their nukes but we haven't done anything to get rid of ours. No wonder everybody hates us. We're special.

The only way they would be happy is if we let them test a nuclear weapon on some poor country.

How about we need nukes for their deterrent effects? There really is no other reason to have them, the expense for them in enormous. Course I would rather pay that then have someone use a nuke on us.

The South Koreans want us out. We should pull our troops out and bring them home. At least they would be training and ready to use as refresher troops for our current middle-eastern fiasco.

We have enough troops in Japan, for example, to handle any emergency that arises on the Korean peninsula. If North Korea was stupid enough to actually attack the South, our 37,000 soldiers there would be toast. To me, it's not worth it. Let South Korea defend South Korea. We can always back them up.

I'm down with that. Do we really need military bases around the world?

The answer is no. They do not good in the quick reaction catagory.

We have Navy ships for forward deployment and power projection.

Why the hell do you think we have troops there in the first place? To beef up the tourist economy of South Korea?

If, we go by your "plan" and NK invades SK what do you propose we do? Launch (another) amphib assault on SK to get rid of the NK?

Cool Hand - [Personal attack removed] By the way, why don't you enlighten us on why you think we are on the peninsula...

Cool Hand - [Personal attack removed]. By the way, why don't you enlighten us on why you think we are on the peninsula...

Because the UN brokers the cease fire agreement between N and S Korea. As part of the UN it is up to us to provide the troops to enforce that.

Ever hear of the SEATO treaty? There is another reason there, but you can do your famous Google look up to find out more.

Put simply (so and idiot like you can understand it) the troops are there to keep the NK up North and away from the SK.

With out us there it would have been like Vietnam after we left. The North would attack the South.

Such a withdrawal would fulfill a long-term ambition of North Korea to get the United States out of South Korea. The North Korean regime thinks it could then finally invade and unite the Korean Peninsula under Northern rule thus assuring the survival of the Northern regime. While the regime probably would lose in a conventional war against the South it might be able to win if it has nuclear weapons or if it can first convince the South to reduce the size of its military. The North Korean regime believes the existence of two separate governments on the Peninsula is not sustainable. Its view is basically that it has to win the unification struggle or the regime will cease to exist.

I'm sick of warning you two about getting personal.

Plus now it seems every thread where you two get involved with each other in turns to crap. Maybe you two can follow your argument in an argument but both your posting and quoting skills need work when you get heated. It's substandard, and not worth anyone's time including yours.

Last open warning. Next time when you get official warns and points docked you'll know why. And they'll just keep coming.

I hope others at least have learned from your public displays over the past few days to know when a fight is worth fighting, and when someone is just being an antagonist.

You haven't convinced each other to switch sides yet, so stop trying. And FYI neither one has won any fights. You both look like fools.

No more.

Thanks Rant. I was begining to think that the mudpit (as much as I love it) has spread it's venom to the other sections of this site.

Keep it civil people, or take it to the mudpit. Not just the Mods are on board with that idea.

Hey Jethro,
I am in the Navy and believe me, we could not do our job withtout those bases around the world. But apparently you know better so please enlighten me.

Those troops serve a valuable strategic purpose in the region, and they are the only thing standing in the way of South Korea being smashed by the phsycopathic Kim Jong Ill. As Cool Hand wrote if we withdrew our troops from S.K it would take a massive amphibious assault to gain a foothold in the peninsula, the resulting battle to retake the South, and then Attack the North would cost many more lives than those 37,000.

Its frustrating when many South Koreans want us out, and one is even tempted to say to hell with you, but doing so would only cause more problems for us down the road.
Remember that Korea has always been known as the "dagger to Japans throat", allowing a unified Korea to exist under the Norths control would be very dangerous for Japan and East Asian regional stability in general.
