(Reuters) - A Russian man who described local police as "scum" in an Internet posting was given a suspended jail sentence on Monday for extremism, prompting bloggers to warn of a crackdown on free speech online.

I know this happened in russia, but come on are there starting to take away peoples right to free speech like there are doing elswhere, just yesterday in NZ here made it illegal for you to wear sunglassers or a hat when you enter a bank.

I'm not sure Russians have ever had the privilege of "Freedom of Speech". Not that we even have that here in the USA.

Uhm yeah... The funny thing about Russia is they have a long standing history of silencing their government and authority figure critics through either imprisonment, assassination, or merely having the KGB beat the bejesus out of them. Using this as an example of how our freedom of speech is going away is kinda like pointing towards an open cess pool in Africa as a reason why there's a funky smell in San Diego.

Well, considering Russia is still leading the world in assassinating dissidents and people who know too much via radiation poisoning and other not so easy to detect toxins, I think it's safe to say that even in post-cold war Russia, it's probably a wise move to keep your mouth shut and your head down.
