FBI HEADQUARTERS NOT CLEARED FOR CLASSIFIED INTELLIGENCE

www.fas.org

“The Hoover Building does not meet the Interagency Security Committee’s criteria for a secure Federal facility capable of handling intelligence and other sensitive information,” the Senate Appropriations Committee observed in a new report on the 2009 Commerce, Justice and State Appropriations bill.

FBI Headquarters Building.--The Committee is concerned that
the limitations of the J. Edgar Hoover Building, which has not
had any major structural improvements since it was opened in 1974, could affect the FBI's ability to fulfill its mission.

Seems a little late to announce such a thing now, why wouldn't they keep it quiet and make a silent adjustment?

Only reason, they want the public to know, or it was leaked for some political reason. But why smear the FBI, they have such a great track record...yeah right.

Looks like the FBIs inability to handle intel has once again come back to bite them where the sun don't shine.

Do you think this announcement may be followed by an allegation of espionage here in the US by a foreign power such as China or Russia? It would tend to absolve the FBI of some responsibility for the breach if their headquarters was unfit to handle classified material.

This seems like an opening gambit of some sort to me. I get the feeling this news will be followed up with something to substantiate its release.

Since you put it that way, it does have a "VA lost sensitive laptop" sort of feel. Could be very bad, because China is probably the worlds most notorious espionage engaged nation, next the USA of course. But their industrial and technology side has us beat I suspect.

This may well prove a good one to keep an eye on.

Probably just a way to get approval to spend a couple billion on a new facility or a big renovation of the current one.

Think that contract is going out for public bid? HA!

That is another possibility. This will help justify renovations and "security enhancement" for FBI headquarters. It may be more likely this announcement is laying the groundwork for an appropriations bill.

In my opinion the FBI first needs to clean house by eliminating corrupted agents and officials put new protocols in place which will prevent the possibility of future corruption and a solid outside policing of it's more 'secret' activities before they are in any way exposed to anything considered 'classified'.
