We have been finding that many processes we once thought to be gradual shifts over long periods of time are actually rather violent and sudden - or
anything but constant.
Global temperature, for example, rockets all over the place - changing as many as 10 degrees (Celsius, I believe) inside of a decade.
Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we discover that changes in the Earth's magnetic field are far more sudden than we ever would have
imagined. The same with many natural processes.
