McCain says only World War III would justify draft

news.yahoo.com

Only World War III would prompt Republican presidential candidate John McCain to bring back the military draft, McCain said on Tuesday.

Many Americans are fearful the U.S. government will be forced to reinstitute the draft given the prolonged Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Asked about that possibility by a potential voter in Florida during a telephone "town hall meeting," McCain said: "I don't know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III."

With the threat looming from both sides, both US and Israel, that Iran will be attacked, and many to believe that this will start WWIII, would it be inevitable that the draft would occur under McCain?

Not only would we have soldiers who will be fighting an illegal war, like Iraq, but now all able bodied males have to join in and fight for these greedy war-profiteering scumbags.

McCain just said that he couldn't see the draft happening unless we had something like World War III.

Which hopefully is true.

Yeah i'm pretty sure if they attack Iran they could pass it off as WW III.

But if they expect me to go along with a draft, than they can kiss my ass.

I hope nobody gives in and goes along with a draft.

I would like to know what a not all out WWIII would look like. It would be a World War, that is about as all out as you can get.

What a freak'n dumb thing for him to say. :shk:

If the balloon went up and WWIII were happening, there would be NO TIME for congress et all to reinstate a draft, to get the wheels in motion, to get the draft notices out, to get people trained, to deal with those dragging their feet, etc etc.

Not a whole lotta' folks would answer a draft call to go to WWIII.

It would be nuclear and it would be over in hours.

If McCain gets elected and he sees that we need a draft and it isn't WWIII ... he'll NEVER be able to get a non-wwiii draft.

BTW .. As far as I'm concerned, we ARE in WWIII.
An all out nuclear exchange would be WWIV.

It might not take as long as you think. There are processing centers in every state right now for those who chosse to join. These can be geared up pretty quick. Also 18 year old still have to regester for selective service, so the goverment has a standing list to pick from. City coucils would at as local draft boards. As I see it, they got most angles covered. Not a big surprise. Oh I forgot we have computers now that are much better than the ones we had during Veitnam.

Weird. If this were a book that would be called foreshadowing. We are given a hint of what is to come later in the novel. Let's hope he never has to institute a draft.

It still amazes me that people think there's any chance of us having a draft.

Don't you people get it? They aren't looking for military power, and they certainly aren't going to institute a draft.

They don't want a draft any more than you do. Yet people think they do.

I've said this many times to many people and it doesn't seem to connect, so I'll try to make it as clear as possible:

Please tell me what sense it makes to disarm the population of their personal firearms, only to stick them in tanks, arm them with automatic rifles, hand them grenades, put them on large naval battle ships, and put them in highly advanced fighter aircraft?

Does this make any sense to anyone?

We know they want to disarm us. That much is known. So does it really make sense to disarm an entire population, whom primarily only has handguns, and give them military grade weaponry?

By the time a draft could ever roll around, they would have pissed us off enough that any arming of the general population with military grade weaponry would just be asking for a coup.

They use the prospect of a draft to terrify you, and clearly it works. Try thinking of why they WON'T do it before you let it terrify you, and you will see that that far out-weighs why they potentially would do it.

I love Obama, but I hate to say that he would be first before McCain to institute a draft. A draft is a more democratically supported idea. It's more fair; everyone has to serve instead of the few. Everyone gives to their country and receives the benefits back.

Obama supports federal funding for college students if they serve in a branch of the military for 2 years after they graduate. That's a lot closer to a draft than McCain is.

Obama still has my vote because I see him as someone who would avoid going to war at all possible costs, whereas McCain would be ready to jump the gun. I just thought I'd clear that up though.

When the PTB's kids have to go to war.
Then war will stop.
Or maybe not, hell they would probably sacrifice their own children.

Since you mention it, its worth noting that John McCain does indeed have two sons in the military and one has served in Iraq with the Marines. He very rarely mentions it on the campaign trail and its something I did not know until recently.

Otherwise, yes, I think he's right. I think its highly unlikely that there will be another military draft, at least in the current political environment, unless another world war occurs. A decade or two from now, they may not be the case, depending upon public attitudes at the time and the threat level we could face.

I agree with one guy accept I would like to emphasize it. WE ARE IN WORLD WAR III. All it is is a title. They wont change it until Russia says quit picking on IRAN, THEN it will be WW III Officially anyways.

Whoever said they dont know who will go? Uhh... I dont see there being any way out. Technology is far better than it has even been and they will put facial recognition systems out... bolos all sorts of counter measures.

I dont think we will have a choice... Just move away to some other country and denounce your citizenship might be the only way. The world is in control of each and every human. The only thing weve accomplished over the last 7000 Years was learn how to let morons get into full power... and we elect them and support them and they send us to war while their lazy @$$es play golf
No offense but the world is screwed.

First, a side note. I've never been in "love" with any candidate I've supported, and never known a conservative to ever even say something like that. However, you are not the first dem(?) I've heard say that. Honestly, do you really fall in love with your candidates? And if you do, isn't that a pretty dangerous loss of objectivity?

A draft is a more democratically supported idea. It's more fair; everyone has to serve instead of the few. Everyone gives to their country and receives the benefits back.

This assumption is a major fallacy. The U.S. has an all volunteer military. No one is forced to serve. How ironic that dems that generally seem to oppose anything to do with the military are in favor of people being forced to serve in it. Of course, we understand their real reason for supporting a draft - to bring and end to the war "Viet Nam style" with demonstrations against the draft, etc.

Obama supports federal funding for college students if they serve in a branch of the military for 2 years after they graduate. That's a lot closer to a draft than McCain is.

Sounds unworkable - like a lot of Obama proposals. You give people money to go to school after they graduate if they go into the military. At best it would take a whole new (inefficient) bureaucracy to manage such a program, and in the end it would likely turn into just another federal handout whether earned or not.

Obama still has my vote because I see him as someone who would avoid going to war at all possible costs, whereas McCain would be ready to jump the gun. I just thought I'd clear that up though.

But history shows that appeasement never works ...

You can't be serious.

wait, yep he really said it.

Someone needs to explain to me what the **** the point of a draft is anymore.
We have billions if not TRILLIONS of dollars invested in super bombers, manless aircraft, tanks, planes, more planes, more tanks, big bullets, etc.

The likes of which this world has never seen before.

The only draft that i believe was "called for" in our american history was world war 2. We had no technology back then, and were 'out gunned' by the nazi's. We needed footmen to carry out the grunt work to win the war. Its a sad truth of American history.

But in modern times, when a helicopter can see through walls with infared imaging from 1000 ft in the air
and satellites can read your name tag from miles out in space
you're telling me that we need to FORCE our young men into battle?

You could literally fight out a war against Iran setting at a computer desk in the Army, like playing a damn video game.

Please.

McCain would love to go into war and elect a new draft, IMO
otherwise he'd say "there's not a need for a draft"
Because, quite frankly, there isnt.

First off I don't have any idea where you are going with the 'love' thing, it sounds like baiting to me so I'll leave that be.

You say my assumption, which it's not by the way, that democrats tend to support the idea of a draft more than Republicans is a fallacy but then you go on to agree with that notion? I think you're pretty confused. When I said above the reasons why democrats support it I'm saying THAT is why it appeals to them. They see it as more fair, as give and get back in return. I'm not saying that's how it really turns out to be but that is the reason why democrats tend to support it, it fits their ideals.
