US: Israeli Military Exercise Directed at Iran

Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military’s capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran’s nuclear program.

One Israeli goal, the Pentagon official said, was to practice flight tactics, aerial refueling and all other details of a possible strike against Iran’s nuclear installations and its long-range conventional missiles.

A second, the official said, was to send a clear message to the United States and other countries that Israel was prepared to act militarily if diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from producing bomb-grade uranium continued to falter.

Israel takes the lead in racheting up tensions to the next level with Iran. The Pentagon duly breaks the news in a concerted PR campaign.

If and when an attack on Iran occurs, it now looks that Israel will be the chosen aggressor; apparently the political and strategic costs are too high for the US in the end. Cooler heads are apparently prevailing, which is news in itself, seeing how eager the neocon faction of the administration is over attacking Iran.

And surprise surprise, oil is on the up.

New York AP -- Oil futures rebounded Friday as Pentagon officials said a large scale Israeli military exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean early this month was intended in part as a demonstration of Jerusalem's ability to attack Iranian nuclear facilities.

If oil futures rise on the prospect like this, can you imagine what prices will do if Iran is attacked?

Oh boy, here we go again. I just hope who ever is in power really thinks twice before starting WW3.
