I served in the US Navy (surface) Never got to really talk to the Airmen that much. Is this thing common?

For years the KC-135 wasn't allowed to refuel F-18s. They would have to refuel a KA-6 or S-3 and have them refuel the Hornets. Hornet pilots would go to disconnect and instead of backing out of the basket and dropping they would drop while still connected breaking the basket. So yes, it does happen. I wouldn't say that it's common, but it happens. Aerial refueling is the hardest maneuver you will have to do with formation flying a close second. You're less than 20 feet from another plane, flying in their turbulence, and having to hold it there for minutes at a time, hitting a very very small target perfectly.

I'd have to add landing on a carrier at night to that list.

That video should remind of us of just how difficult even routine tasks performed by our military really are.
