Finally, wearing an infant?s flowered onesie on her head like a kerchief, she began to pack up. Ms. August, 39, giggled on the steps of her overflowing trailer last Saturday as Sister Judith Brun asked when she might be able to leave the trailer park that, at its peak, housed almost 600 families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Sunday? No response. Monday? A smile.

America is not dead yet! The negatve profile of the U.S. is depressing. Next they'll be burning t-shirts, baseball hats and levi's. In these dark times, I was pathetically grateful for this story, for it reminded me of what makes America great

There are people like this in every city of every state, but no one see them. At least Katrina has helped to put a spotlight on the realities of who Americans really are, the problems they face, etc.

I agree, every state and every country. Still, it's good to see those with a rice bowl gettin getting more than a cardboard box, for a few nights. I guess what exited me was seeing this excess for even a short time.

i totally agree that americans face problems, but i mean COME ON

if the government comes to my house and says "you better think about getting out of dodge, there's going to be a killer storm coming"

i'd get the hell out of there at all costs.

Im not saying bush did all he could do, or even did a good job, but there were a lot of people there that don't deserve sympathy (and there are those who do)

as a disclaimer - dont turn this into a matter of race either, there were a lot of "white peoplpe" and "mexican people" caught in the disaster as well.

Many couldn't get out and those in this article are a perfect example. Many who ended up in the trailer parks, did get out, but couldn't live in what was left of their homes. Disasters can happen anywhere to anyone.

How bout this.....

Live alone, no car, no friends, no public transportation leaving, wheelchair bound, crippled, insane, elderly etc.

you dont need friends to leave
you dont need to live with someone to leave

most people stayed because they wanted to

its just like in florida when ppl board up their homes for each hurricane and say "this is home im staying"

well, fine, stay, but blame nobody but yourself if something bad happens to ya.
