The funny thing is, and perhaps the reason I was so cautious to eliminate other things first, is that at just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning, we were awoken by what could only be described as a "whaling banshee", screaming in pain in the fields around us. It was unlike any animal I have heard before (and we live out in the country!)
After listening to the noise for about 15 minutes and looking out of the windows to see if we could actually see anything, the noises stopped but for a low humming sound.
I had dozed back off by this time, but my wife said that she heard the humming sound and then minutes later the screaming noise started again. This went on for about half an hour.
Now there is probably a very logical explanation for tis, but I'm darned if I know what it is!

I used to be on Salisbury plain alot when in the reserves (5th battalion RGJ) and reading your post made me feel like i was about to lose my dinner.
In 1995 (march time) we were in a wooded copse prepping for a night assault when we heard this hummmm, hummmmm, rising and falling like a substation about to blow. as you can guess there was no substation around for miles!.
The next thing this primevil terrifying scream rolled around us, like a cross between a huge cat like rooowwwwwl and a scream of terror a child gives off.
Now, our WO2 was as hard as nails, mean as a cobra with toothache and rock steady.
He walked amongst us, counted us all down and called end ex over the net. Just then the same noise happend again, this time closer. Captain C, WO2 and two other NCO's bombed up with live ammo and they took into all round defense (with us recruits behind them).
About 10 minutes later two lynxs came in to pick us up and we scrambled on board.
