On battlefield they stood in rank,
Where we fought them tooth and nail,
Of sacrifice made and courage shown,
But to what avail?
This war of peace they fought for us,
And for our closest friend,
One million dead and many more maimed,
Before its bitter end.
But we weep not, for the dead,
For they cannot feel as we,
This feeling of ill,
This burden of guilt,
These actions of violence see.
So stand up for our soldiers now,
And assuage their minds of sin,
Stand in row and rank,
In file and flank,
And cheer with glorious din.
And in this war, of shock and awe,
Forget not why we went.
To stop Saddam, to lower his arm,
And warn those in his bent.
We hear not words from those we shun,
Nor prayers from those who flee,
The harm is done, the war begun,
A rifle is your key.
