Im not that much of a Star Wars fan, but the one charactor that I did enjoy above all the other characters in the movies was R2-D2. For some reason I
thought he was the actual hero of the films. Always ready willing and able to do his bit, R2-D2 could always manage to save everyone.
If for some reason you have been living on Mars, under a rock, with your fingers in your ears for the last 35 years, R2-D2 is an Astromech Droid from
the Star Wars Series...
A resourceful, spunky and adventurous astromech droid, R2-D2 has saved the day time and again. His little .96-meter tall frame is packed with all
sorts of tool-tipped appendages that make him a great starship mechanic and computer interface specialist. It's his bravery, however, that has made
him an invaluable asset to his owners and friends.
So aparently there is a club called the R2-D2 Builders Group Whos perpose is to re create this lovable little
Astromech.
Robotics being at the state they are today as you can see it's quite possible to create this little guy. Who knows, with the right amount of hard
drives, CPUs, RAM, and programming it might be possible to build one that wouldnt need it's radio controller anymore.
Sorry Wucky, but the hot chick in your avatar has got my attention more than R2-D2!
I remember back in elementary school they brought in an R2 unit for some show and tell thing. I don't remember the circumstances, but it was one of
the real radio controlled props from the original movie. (this was in the late 70's).
It was pretty neat. I had no idea there are people out there building these, but it doesn't surprise me.
And just in case you can't get enough of this idea and want to build your own R2-D2 unit
This site has an interesting article about making your very own little
astromech droid for use as a conversation piece or to help you defeat a intergalatic empire*.
It would be interesting if one could build one of these to be completely autonomous. Perhaps marrying it with a Roomba to do meanial chores around the
house.
*disclaimer: Wukky does not condone creating your own R2 unit in order to defeat any intergalactic empire on your own. Please join some rag
tag rebellion alliance in order to take on the dark lord of the sith.
I would love nothing more than a remote control R2-D2. Although the one being offered is cool as hell, it isn't the actual size I want one of
those in the first vid but I could never build one myself.
That is the only think keeping me from buying that right now
Cool thread. I love to Star Wars!
P.S. I just recently sold my stormtrooper armor. I really am a huge Star Wars Dork!
So I am looking through the types and designs and how to's on how to build one of these things and im lookin and I say "wait a minute, these things
are just huge simple RC cars!"
heck we ATSers could think of something better to do with these things than this. I mean the projector one is cool and all but kleverone's right
it's too small. You could put a projector it it as well as all the other nifty connections.
I was also thinking a voice activated speaker phone would be a nice feature, and how about several hard drives with directives for reactionary
movement based on outside chriteria? What about puting a webcam in it and a wifi card?
I mean were talkin "pimp my astromech" here. This is ATS I am sure we as a group could come up with some
plausable and doable improvements right?
