So here's the deal. If you have an AVI file that you want to convert into almost any format, you can use this freeware

What I'm going to assume you're trying to do is burn an AVI to a DVD for play on your DVD player. If that's no what you're trying to do, then
ignore the next few paragraphs.
DVD video files are played using the VOB file type, and a bunch of them at that. The easiest way to do it is to use Nero 6 (package 1)

I think that's a free download of the full version, but it might just be a trial version. From here, you should get the burning to playable DVD
option. If not, install the Nero Vision Express add-on (available in package 2) and you should be good to go. You can make backgrounds, embed music,
create sub-menus and all that fun stuff that DVDs have.
