Archivist's Notes: The comms is regard to DRV reaction to the Desoto mission. It was with regard to artillery position and repositioning to support DRV vanal patrols.

Subject: Gulf of Tonkin Documents, Release 2

Summary: Possible Reaction to Desoto Patrol

Comments: This document apears in good shape and states that on July 31st after an apparent silence of 34 days,

a station (RAD V0083) Suspected of Serving Dong Hoi Naval HQS, passed 6 unreadble messages to

it's subordinate (RAD V0094) Located on Isle Du Tigre (Hon Co).

Possibly related at 23072, A Naval HQS AO Ben Thuy, then passed a readable message to

Vessel (Mull NR)377 which stated Military Region Directives:

Comrade HOA GO TO MEET (1G/U) IN CHARGE OF THE MILITARY COMPANY TO DISCUSS DEFINING THE POSITION AND THE STRICT SURFACE

AND TO REPORT TO THE MILITARY REGION UNQTE.

During the time frame of this activity the Desoto Patrol was orbiting in the immediate vicinity of Isle Du Tigre.

The apparent planned cooridination of Naval/Artillary elements is interpolated as preplanning Artillary fire missions on

Nautical charts to support DVR Naval Patrols. The possibility that this activity may be a reaction to recent "Enemy"

Incursions in DVR waters must not be discounted. However see (2/Q/VHN/R24-64)

Archivist Notes: This is an exciting read as it really takes you into the meat of the amount of patience it took for our Military to overcome the silence of those 34 days and remain diligent toward the

eventality of a break in the silence.

This document is one of several intercepted communications from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, in which the DRV attacked US Naval vessels on Aug. 2nd, 1964.
