Robin Cook, former British Foreign minister (now deceased via (debatable) suicide) said the following re Bin Laden and Al-Qaida:

...Osama bin Laden is no more a true representative of Islam than General Mladic, who commanded the Serbian forces, could be held up as an example of Christianity. After all, it is written in the Qur'an that we were made into different peoples not that we might despise each other, but that we might understand each other.

Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians. Inexplicably, and with disastrous consequences, it never appears to have occurred to Washington that once Russia was out of the way, Bin Laden's organisation would turn its attention to the west...

Extract taken from The struggle against terrorism cannot be won by military means written by Dr Robin Cook.

Hope this helps to explain the current situation.

You might also want to look at Robin Cook, the Database and Secrets (not written by Robin Cook).

...In the francophone world, a colourful former French military intelligence officer, Pierre-Henri Bunel, had had a book published in 2004, "Proche-Orient, une guerre mondiale?", extracts of which appeared [in French] on a French conspiracy website. The extract went into some detail of how al-Qaeda originally referred to a computer database of Islamist fighters. But, AFAIK, it was not until after Robin Cook had revealed the same in the Guardian, and after his death a month later, that an English translation of Bunel's words appeared on the web. It's a rough translation, which doesn't read well. But the basic outline of his account accords with what Cook had revealed...

Robin cook died 6th Aug 2005, one month after he wrote the above referenced article. His (limited) biographical details can be read here.

If UBL was in custody we'd hear about it. The Bush administration would bring it out and let everyone know that it was a republican administration that caught him .. thus helping McCain in the Fall.

UBL is NOT caught. We'd definately hear it from Bush 43 if he were.

Yeah, *IF* Bin-Laden was in U.S. or NATO custody, sure.

But what if he was in the "custody" of a group of high ranking officers in the Pakistani Intelligence Services, assigned to that area of the country, keeping him safe through avoiding attempts by the Pakistani Intelligence to find him by getting the information from the inside, ahead of time. We know there are parts of the Pakistani Army, Intelligence, and Government that are sympathizers to these people, old friends, and kin to these people by blood, or agree with their ideas. Ever heard of the renegade Pakistan Nuke Scientist selling info? or .. the conspiracies of Benazir Bhutto, may she rest in peace, being targeted by elements of the Pakistani Services?

Pakistan is kind-of like Iraq in the sense that you cannot trust ANYONE, that everyone is crooked, that everyone has secret ties with people theyre not supposed to, and that everyone is a liar. There.

Yeah...it's also kind of like Washington. Or any other government entity, now that I come to think about it

Even if Osama was caught, there are still many on the wanted list. Al Qaeda is not one man.
