BRIC Institutionalised; Group Vows to Help Change World

www.hindu.com

YEKATERINBURG (Russia): Russia, India, China and Brazil on Friday vowed to turn their four-way group into a powerful instrument for changing the world.

At their first stand-alone meeting here, the Foreign Ministers institutionalised BRIC, agreeing to hold regular meetings at the level of Foreign Ministers.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee hailed BRIC as a “unique combination of mutually complementary economies” and platform to promote energy and food security, fight terrorism...

O.K Not the most catching title in the world but an important one never-the-less. BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) is, as stated by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, "a unique combination of mutually complementary economies” and platform to promote energy and food security, fight terrorism and reform global political and financial bodies.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said BRIC would work to “support global stability and ensure uninterrupted and manageable global development.” (quote taken from main article listed above).

Could BRIC become a rival to NATO and the UN? I think there's a very good chance that it will expand in size and influence enough to be so.

Russia, India, China Step-Up Solidarity:

"In a joint communiqué, adopted at their eighth meeting, the Foreign Ministers of the countries “reaffirmed the commonality” in their views on the global situation and, for the first time, set out coordinated positions on Kosovo, Iran, Afghanistan and the Asia-Pacific region, as India displayed a greater readiness to go along with its partners in the triangle on these issues.

On Kosovo, India for the first time joined Russia and China in stating categorically in the RIC communiqué that “the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo is contrary to the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244,” and calling for settling the issue “in accordance with norms of international law” and on the basis of “an agreement” and “through negotiations” between Belgrade and Pristina.

Earlier India only said it “takes note” of the declaration of independence of Kosovo and was “studying the evolving situation.”

On Iran’s nuclear programme, RIC called for “a political and diplomatic settlement” of the problem “through negotiations.”

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee went even further in his speech at the meeting, saying India supported Tehran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy provided it fulfilled its international obligations, that all outstanding issues should be resolved through the International Atomic Energy Agency and that “confrontation and destabilisation” in the region had adverse effects on the situation."

The group has increased in size recently to four members from three (Brazil joined the group last). As the above quote shows, they're banding together to argue against the UN where they feel the UN has treated them with indifference to their concerns.

I'm not usually AN Edgar Cayce fan but didn't he suggest that Russia would be a power for democracy after the fall of communism:

Quote below taken from Crystalinks.

Two of Cayce's major predictions concerned the futures of China and the Soviet Union, the world's great Communist giants. In 1944, he prophesied that China would one day be "the cradle of Christianity as applied in the lives of men." Through Russia, he said "comes the hope of the world. Not in respect to what is sometimes termed Communism or Bolshevism -- no! But freedom -- freedom! That each man will live for his fellow man. The principle has been born there. It will take years for it to be crystallized; yet out of Russia comes again the hope of the world." Russia, he said, would be guided by friendship with the United States. Its attempt to rule "not only the economic, but the mental and spiritual life" of its people was doomed to failure.

I think the future just got a little more interesting.

Is this a new Warsaw pact in the making.. makes ya wonder with all the tensions lately. And this seems too much like a move to say choose sides to fight global terrorism . How will the groups (nato and bric) get along this seems real fishy and i thought India was an ally i must be wrong.

A Bit tongue-in-cheek but I can't resist, were Cuba and Ecuador to join, the BRIC acronym might become the RuBIC-CubE? 6 Nations, 1 Voice, (represented by) the 6 Sides of a cube - 616!

An interesting move.

With the old world order led by the UN and America failing, could the voice of the dynamic new economies be more forceful?

Not to mention that the BRIC nations are untainted by many of the failures of the UN and America vis-a-vis Arab nations. BRIC could potentially solve the issues surrounding the middle east since they are considered impartial and neutral.

This could well be a non-conspiratorial New World Order that we are witnessing the emergence of.

This is what I was getting at with my above posts: the US dominated world as represented by the U.N and NATO is not listening to other nations enough for them to feel appreciated as being mature, globally effected and affected entities. I doubt that many will disagree that many of the UN's and NATO's actions have favored a select few only. The only way the "less cool" kids i.e those not in the "in crowd" can play safely in the playground is by forming their own gang and to influence the global economy and political arena as a single entity.

With Brazil being part of the group, in the eyes of the USA's politicians, it kinda places Russia (and China) a little bit closer to the USA. Obviously, in reality, Russia is no further away now than it ever was; but I'm sure the USA will again be playing the "the Big Bad Bear of the East" card as a way of instilling fear and paranoia into the minds of its fellow gang members as a means to ensure it gets its way cleared for its own agenda to be actioned.

The text below is from a Russian news source (BRIC countries' ministers met in full session). It implies that the group is aimed at reform of the UN as opposed to total competition with it. It also states that the groups members have a long term aim of assisting each other economically through the next 10 to 20 years by working closely to share resources (sounds like global socialism at national level - from each (country) according to his abilities and to each (country) according to his needs).

The ministers from countries belonging to the group BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China), met today in Yekaterinburg at full strength. The meeting is largely historical. For the first time heads of diplomatic agencies discussed the issues are not under UN auspices, but independently.

"It is important, however, note that we have considered a number of important issues, in particular UN reform, food crisis, the fight against poverty and hunger, the problem of energy and climate change," - said Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.

"We are deeply satisfied with the level of mutual trust, level of openness of our discussions. It is important that all share the understanding that the BRIC countries, which account for more than half the world's population and who have become major centres of economic growth in the centres of political influence, simply have to close interact, "- said Russia FM Sergei Lavrov.

According to the forecasts, after 10-20 years, India and China will become the largest producer of goods, while Brazil and Russia - the suppliers of raw materials, especially energy. Economic growth pushes the country for close contacts. Following today's meeting of Foreign Ministers, scheduled for November meeting of the Ministers of Economy and Finance countries in this "quartet".

Organization of the same negotiations in Yekaterinburg on all parties were satisfied. Governor Eduard Rossel Sergey Lavrov gave a sign "For contribution to international cooperation." The head of the field, in turn, thanked for the fact that for negotiations was chosen precisely Urals region.

"It gave me an opportunity to meet with each Foreign Minister separately and discuss our economic interests with each State. I hope that after this meeting we have dramatically increased the volume of export transactions with these countries" - said Eduard Rossel.
