This is my proposition to you guys. I need your help and advice. Some months ago I got evidence that someone had been using AIM to drop files on my
computer desktop, and presumably retrieve files from there. (I won't tell you where I know these people from, but let's just say it's "Not the
Smallest Retailer in America"
) The Ethereal logs seem to indicate some evidence of snooping via AOL/AIM also. I truly think someone was spying on
me this way. I no longer use AIM as it is dangerous. Recently I got two separate invitations from someone I know casually at work to install Yahoo
Messenger. Of course this is another IM app, and presumably has file transfer capabilities also. What I would like to do is clean my machine
(temporarily) of any personal files, password lists, etc., install Yahoo Messenger, and advertise my Yahoo handle to everyone I know. Then I would
leave a file or two on the desktop on purpose for the benefit of the spies. I was leaning towards something like a small executable that would write
porn to the HDD until it fills up completely, or a gotcha message, or, when I was really filling wicked, a small TCP app that would relentlessly ping
gov'ment servers, thus giving the spies unwanted gov'ment attention. Is this a good idea? What vulnerabilities would I expose myself to? Does this
idea appeal to any of you? So far it's just a wild idea. I haven't done any work on it.
BTW, sometime let me tell you about my experiences with the management and employees at the previously mentioned "Not the Smallest Retailer in
America". Don't trust them.
