Richardson was walking his daughter to a McDonald's for burgers at 6:40 p.m. Monday when a 1990 Chevy Cavalier jumped a curb and careened towards them, police said, citing witness accounts.

He grabbed his daughter just before the car slammed the two into the fence, police said.

Richardson was pronounced dead shortly after the crash -- a loss his twin, Timothy, said he felt before he was told.

It's stories like this that make me feel so sad, and yet so good, all at the same time. In short... this guy is a HERO, no second thought for his own life, a true gentleman. A much better story about fathers than what we have been having to suffer through the news in the last week or so.

On a second note, was i correct in reading:

...charged with two felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence, police said. He was also cited with driving without a valid license or insurance.

Does that mean this idiot driver basically walks away from this incident with nothing? I am sure here in Australia this is NOT what would have happened. How can the law possibly protect this person.

I have very little respect for drunk drivers, i have no understanding of how or why people do it.

In Peru they shoot you if you are caught drunk driving two times in a row.
I say that needs to happen here.
Now this poor little girl will have to live without her father.
As well as the psychological trauma that will turn into practically guaranteed, though I wish it wouldn't be so, my daddy died because of me.
I think the driver deserves whatever he/she gets, as long as it isn't light.

As for the man. He died an honorable death and I for one honor him.

I believe that these charges stemmed from the accident and are not prior offenses. He’s charged with two counts because there were two victims involved. These are felony counts, so I believe the penalty, if he's found guilty, will be steep.

I truly feel for the family of this man who have lost a wonderful person. Anyone who gives up their own life to save another is a Hero.

What a HERO this father is, making the ultimate sacrifice for his child.
God bless his brave soul. His daughter is lucky to have had such a parent.

These are serious charges, I don't think anyone will sympathize with him
here. DUI involving homicide commands stiff penalties in Cook County.

My heart goes out to the Richardson family.

Thanks for answering my question. I am glad to hear that this guy will have to do time, if he is not already finding it difficult to live with the guilt of what he did. It is unfortunate that this silly mistake is going to haunt him forever, however, it was a horrific crime that needs to be punished.
