I found the following news items today -

Native Hawaiians' Blockade Historic Palace

and

This Chinese Media Article

The second is a Google translated page so might not pull through (sorry if it doesn't).

A quote from the first news source:

(CNN) -- A group of native Hawaiians occupied the grounds of the old Hawaiian monarchy's royal residence Wednesday, vowing to stay and do the business of the kingdom's government. art.gate.ap.jpg A member of the protest group Hawaiian Kingdom Government unlocks the palace gate. Click to view previous image 1 of 3 Click to view next image "It is through a greater realm than ours" that the group took this action, said Mahealani Kahau, elected leader of the group, called Hawaiian Kingdom Government. "Today and every day, we will be here to assume our role." Group members left the palace grounds Wednesday afternoon, but vowed to return Thursday morning, The Honolulu Advertiser reported. "We'll be here at 6 o'clock in the morning," Kahau told the newspaper. The group is one of several in Hawaii that reject statehood and seek to return to the constitutional monarchy that effectively ended in 1893 when a group of politicians, businessmen and sugar planters -- aided by the U.S. minister to Hawaii -- overthrew the kingdom's government.

Edit: Fixed title.

This is the first time I've heard anything about people in Hawaii wanting independence from the USA. Can some of you good people of the USA or Hawaii shed some light on this? Are the protesters representing a minority of the Hawaiian people or is this something that's likely to get bigger as time goes on?

The other thing that shocks me is that this hasn't been more widely reported outside of the USA by the MSM.

The Indians of the Main Land then should be doing more to get their land back then as well.... oh wait, we gave them firewater to screw up their lives and pos lands so they couldn't farm or migrate with the buffalo.

EDIT
Removed sarcasm, as the titles were fixed... hahaha.
Party On!

It's a decent sized group, but it's not a huge group. The majority of the Hawaiian People have accepted statehood and are ok with it. There are several groups such as this one that have not and protest for sovereignty a couple of times a year.

If independence were given and a constitutional monarchy re-instated, who would be the new monarch? Or do most of the protesters just want independence regardless of the replacement government's form?

That's just it. They're different groups, and don't have any particular person that I ever knew of that would be in charge if the monarchy was reestablished. They all want the monarchy back, but they aren't really working together as one major group. They're all seperate groups, acting at seperate times, in seperate ways.

There will be more to it than this, but.. it sounds like the "The grass is always greener..." syndrome or they just like to have something to do on their days off work...

If the majority are O.K with statehood then I suppose the protesters wont upset too many people unless they organize into one large group with a definite idea of their aims.
