I think the latter is more likely, IMHO.

Nothing like a quasi-secret club to make people go monkey poo...lol. Lots of people need scapegoats to blame their problems on instead of taking a long hard looksee in the mirror.

If it's not the Masons (of whom I nothing bad), it's the Jews, or Catholics, or Muslims or little green men from Sirius. Anyone, just so long as its not themselves...
