TEHRAN, April 30 (Reuters) - Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, is conducting all its crude trading in euro and yen, instead of the U.S. dollar, an Iranian official was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Iran has been reducing its exposure to the dollar as the United States has ratcheted up sanctions because of a dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme. In December, an official said 90 percent of its oil export earnings were outside the dollar.

"All of Iran's oil trading is being done with euro and yen," Hojjatollah Ghanimifard, international affairs director of the National Iranian Oil Company, told Fars News Agency.

"We agreed with all the buyers of Iran's crude to trade oil in currencies other than dollar," he said. "In Europe, Iran's crude is being sold in euro, in Asia in euro and yen, and trading with yen has not only been in Japan."

Sanctions make sense only if used sparingly and against much weaker country. Otherwise they can backfire. War will happen VERY soon. I'm watching CNN now. They are talking about US covert operation in the making. Here we go guys......

Oh common - war is always on the way.

And the US$?? ha gawd even 5 years ago I would of questioned it's stability.

Now? 1 guess.

At least I can go to the post office and convert the slim pickings I term as 'savings' into euros and practically SWIM somewhere where they are worth the paper they are printed on!

It's a strange new world - soon the US will catch up to the fact that they no longer print all the money.

The US won't go to war with Iran. Silly people. Simple logistics make it an unavailable option.

Logistically impossible how? LAnd by "going to war" do you mean trying to occupy Iran or just bombing their infrastructure and military back to the stoneage (which can be done without putting one boot on the ground).

I guess it all depends on your perspective.

You still need people to provide the intel cycle, plan, provide logistics for and all the other details. Being in two countries and having your hands full means you can't provide those people, nor the airpower.

You dont need forces on the ground for that. Believe me, targets inside Iran already have their coordinates programmed in on our various missles and bombs. Also, our Air Force has plenty of planes available. We have sevral aircraft carriers currently stocked with planes on the ready that are just sitting idle.

We are not flying very many sorties at all over Iraq and Afghanistan right now using less than 20% of our available planes. You have to remember that while yes we have ground forces in two countries right now (totaling less than 200,000 combined out of our 1,000,000 plus) we have PLENTY of equipment on the ready.

But how many trained and experienced people have you got?

Well lets see...everyone in the military is trained and as much fighting as the US does i would say they are experienced as well. See other countries in the world may have large armies as well but how often do their guys fight? The US has LOTS of experience as far as that goes. We definitely dont need to knock any mothballs off of our equipment and we dont need to break out training manuals so that folks know how to use it.

Currently we have a little less than 200,000 troops fighting out of a 1,000,000 force so i would say that leaves around 800,000 troops.

Mind you if the goal is just to obliterate Iran (pretty much like we did Iraq which took less than a month) then no problem.

I think folks fail to realize that Iraq was completely demolished as a military in weeks. Its the occupation that is a different matter. If the US does NOT try to OCCUPY Iran but only seeks to obliterate its military and various vital pieces of infrastructure then that goal is MORE THAN achievable.

We've got some soldiers on the ground in Iraq but its not even 1/4 our total army and a lot of our equipment that was used to destroy their military has been moved out-its no longer needed. Right now we are fighting an insurgency battle that requires some tanks, helicopters and "some" air support but nothing like what we had there in the opening days of the conflict.

They have to occupy iran if they want control off the oil dont they?
otherwise new insurgents will rise in iran and you will have a new # hole to get the boot out off.

Look, occupying Iraq hasnt gained any control of their oil. The US doesnt want war with Iran over oil, it would be over nukes.
