Way to use references from VIETNAM during the height of the Civil Rights movement to prove that it's happening today. Things have changed DRASTICALLY since then. In the 1960s and 1970s, and even into the early 1980s if we had to fight a major war, the US military wouldn't have shown up. The drugs and racial problems where that bad.

Since that time, the military has cleaned itself up SIGNIFICANTLY. Are there gangs, sure, as another poster said the military is a microcosm of regular society. Those gangs are dealt with when they are found. NOT by throwing the person overboard, but by breaking them up and sending them to different locations, or even discharging them from the service.

I have been in the military for the last 6 years, and been to just about every corner of the globe you can go to. I have been to and worked with dozens of different units and never once have I ever heard about anyone being part of a gang. Trust me, that would be dealt with QUICKLY in todays military.....well at least in the Air Force.

Humm did you read that document I posted a link to?

Pokey if it wasn't for newspapers telling me, I wouldn't know there was gangs here or anywhere else. Why because I don't associate in that circle. But as I 've never done drugs I'll have to guess that using your logic it isn't a problem and there isn't any available freely on the streets..

But some how I just get the sense that there are some really sick nasty people out there that work together to rule and excert power or others.

They wear various colours and hang out if places that are safe for them.
Some even wear suits and dark glasses. but just because you don't see them DON'T TELL US THEY DON"T EXISTS. When there is evidence proving they do.

If I'm not mistaken, there are still some old naval laws on the books from the 1800's, that refer to the captain as having the authority to execute sailors on the high seas for mutinous insurrection and/or treason. Technically, this 'gang' idea would fall under that legal precedence.

Indeed. In fact, they are absolutely everywhere. I actually can't think of anywhere they aren't.

i hate to tell you bro but that is the biggest load of crap i've heard. i'm in the navy and anyone who they think might have any gang connections gets kicked out during boot camp. and as for them being "uncontrollable". the US Navy isn't going to put up with something like that going on.

What hog wash. Do you reall think the Capt. of the Carrier would risk 100's of million dollars of equipment and the safety of his sailors? The gangsters would be thrown in the brigg and if they even tried to use a weapon on a command officer, especially during the Global War on Terror, they would be shot where they stood.
There is very little space on a ship and every inch is used for something. How stupid to think that a gang could control a section of the ship.

Maybe you are confusing an incident on the USS Intrepid CV11 that happened around '72 or '73 where a group of black sailors held mutiny and ended up throwing the night watchman overboard.During that time when going to the head two enlisted men were escorted by an armed officer.
Think the family of the night watchman was only told he had died during active duty, and don't think they heard any different.

As a retired USN, this is the best sea story I heard yet.

We do speak up and NO ONE LISTENS! I am a sister and my brother disappeared onboard the Intrepid in 1970 and this has been covered up for years. Even though my family uncovered the lies we were initially told the first year. It is an endless battle and somone knows what happened to my brother. The Navy wanted us to believe he went AWOL, although we found out one year later he was last accounted for in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in shark infested waters. Anyone remember the Oct. 1970 Bermuda cruise? I'd like to know what happened to my brother Mike? He did not jump off that ship and he was not AWOL. You may contact me at [email protected], even anonamously. I do know the last person to have seen him had 3 nervous breakdowns in the next 10 years. What does that mean?

This story is lame (and a bit insulting to our men and women in uniform. I've been a Police Officer and Street Gang Detective with a large law enforcement agency in Southern California for over 20 years. I'm know for a fact that there are real live gang members in the military...I've even seen them for myself...and it's a well-known fact. Just because there are gang members in the military doesn't mean that there are roving gangs made up of military personnel actively conducting street gang activity on board ship (or on a military base). Don't forget, just because you're a gang member doesn't automatically guarantee you'll get along with every other gang member...it's not the Shriners after all. For this idiotic, simple minded, and typical "conspiracy" yarn to be true, you would need several, very unlikely, things to happen together at the same time (ie: a group of young sailors (typically 17 to 25) that happened to be active in a street gang prior to enlisting (that's "volunteering" for the feeble minded), that all got along with each other, that all somehow knew that each was a gang member, that all just happened to be stationed together on a base, then just happened to be grouped together on board a U.S. Navy warship, that just happened to find one another out of 2,000+ crew scattered all over an aircraft carrier, all happening at the same time. But beyond those very unique criteria and circumstances...what's the gain? Drugs, guns, prostitutes, human trafficing, turff or neighborhood pride, extortion, etc.? There just isn't a good "hook". Everyone knows that some of these idiots do get into the military...it's been common knowledge for years. It's also common knowledge that these idiots write gang graffitti on ships, in base housing, on walls in Iraq, and in Afghanistan. Could this be the joke of a former street gang member? Probably so they're kids and they think it's funny...and n some cases it is funny. In my experience most active gang members (both street and prison) just don't have the drive, mental ability, or character to conspire enough to enlist, screen, train, advanced train, pre-deploy train, and finally deploy to a war zone, then survive, just to return home so they can train other street gang members to be better killers. It's not like a good education and military experience gets you promoted to be the gang leader. This story is sooo dumb on sooo many levels.
