"Designed for use by specialist police teams and by the military, the O'Dwyer VLe prototype is the world's first 100% electronic handgun. Utilising new ballistics technology developed in Australia by Metal Storm that has no moving parts, no separate magazine, no ammunition feed, and outstrips conventional firing systems, the seven shot single barrel VLe can fire multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger at a rate equivalent to 60,000 rounds per minute so that a three shot burst appears to be a single shot and the three impacts appear almost simultaneously on the target."

Read more about it here = www.gizmo.com.au...

www.metalstorm.com... Scroll down and click see video then scroll down and look for the Vle handgun it will show a clip and good information on how the gun fires and all other info.

yeah, but a single EMP bomb would render an army equipped with these useless.

Do you know how hard it is to get a useable EMP blast radius out of a conventional explosion?? And if they are close enough to the nuclear blast for it to screw up electronics of there hand gun, then they are probibly not worried about there side arm working
:

Also, did you see the big version of this, that is not a hand gun, can shoot at the rate of like 1,000,000 rounds per minute? (probibly not continusially)

Not disappointed at all with the post here. Great information on advanced weapon technology.

I am a little disappointed with the handgun, though. The stopping power of .45 ACP renders the burst accuracy pointless, plus a three round burst in a handgun, or any firearm is a waste of ammo in my book. One shot, one kill!

As far as the EMP making the weapon pointless, that is a very valid point, but right now, America may be the only ones with that technology. But if so, not for long.

What I think is good is the lack of moving parts. A machine without moving parts is inherently going to be more reliable and last longer. Also, the user recognition feature may make this weapon a more viable personal or home defense weapon, as it would prevent accidental discharge by children, and if it were taken away by an assailant, it couldn't be used against the defender (except to pistol-whip them, which I think is the best use for a handgun against a civilian). It also may put such argument by anti-gun advocates to rest!

One of the things I disliked the most when I was a grunt was carrying extra batteries for everything. That would probably be the one reason I wouldn't choose this weapon. For combat, it's the M1911 or HK USSOCOM .45 for me.

Ehh.... if you want a burst-fire pistol (machine pistol, basically) stick with teh Glock 18. Fires 9mm (boohisssss!) but does the whole three round burst too.

You can shield electronics form EMP. It may not be cost-effective to do it today on such a small scale as an infantry weapon, but the technology may advance enough in the near future to allow it.
