LONDON - Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service says Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are training hundreds of Hamas fighters to prepare for an all-out war this summer against Israel.
The Gaza-based organization’s elite Izzedine al-Qassam Brigade will form the southern front of an attack against the Jewish state while Hezbollah will launch its simultaneous assault from southern Lebanon, according to MI6.
The drill unfolded against the backdrop of increasing tensions in Israel, with many Israelis worried about rocket attacks from Gaza or possible attacks from Lebanon, Syria or Iran.
The government scheduled the drill after criticism that it was unprepared during a 2006 war against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, who fired thousands of rockets into Israel as Israel bombed their positions. Video Watch kids duck and cover as siren sounds »
On Monday, an Israeli official said the entire country is at risk of Hezbollah rocket attacks and blamed Iran for "provoking us" by backing Hezbollah, which is listed by Israel, the United States and several Western nations as a terrorist organization.
Iran, Syria and Hizbullah are preparing their defenses for a war in the summer, and they are more worried about an attack by the US than from Israel, OC Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin told the cabinet on Sunday.
Yadlin pointed out that both Mashaal and PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh have taken a very strident stance since the summit, saying that if the isolation of Hamas did not end, there would be a "third intifada."
Hamas has recently stepped up its terrorist attacks and, according to the IDF, was behind last week's shooting attack along the Gaza security fence in which an Israeli was moderately wounded. Due to the increased arms smuggling from Sinai to the Gaza Strip by Hamas, the IDF has drawn up plans for an broad incursion there.
Hamas's presence in Riyadh presented it with a "complex situation," Yadlin said. On the one hand, Hamas does not want to place itself outside the Arab consensus, and therefore did not attack the resolution accepting the Arab peace initiative, but neither did it support the proposal.
Syria Preparing For Battle With Israel, Believes Israel Will Strike At Hizbullah
Syria attributes statements made by Israeli officials toward Hizbullah as 'incitement.'
At the same time, Hizbullah has called repeatedly for Israel's destruction, and has been receiving shipments of powerful missiles from Syria and Iran that can travel 300km. It is believed that Hizbullah has 10,000 long-range missiles, which can reach all major Israeli cities except Be'er Sheva, and 20,000 short-range missiles that can travel roughly 70km.
Israel has braced for Hizbullah attacks ever since the thirty day mourning period ended for Imad Mugniyah. Islamic Law requires Muslims to be peaceful while mourning. Hizbullah has vowed to strike Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide. 4/2/2008
On Thursday afternoon Israel successfully tested an integral part of the Arrow missile defense system by testing the Green Pine Radar, as it tracked the Blue Sparrow a Rafael made missile which mimics an upgraded version of Iran's Shihab 3 ballistic missile.
According to defense officials the Blue Sparrow was fired by an IAF jet off Israel's coast .
As Israel continued to upgrade its capabilities in preparation for an Iranian attack, Iran warned it will eliminate Israel "from the scenes of the universe," if attacked. "If Israel takes such action against the Islamic Republic of Iran, we will eliminate it from the global arena," General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani told the news conference. 04/15/08
