500m wide asteroid... almost put world on full Alert!

They contemplated about calling the President, thinking it is only a 30m wide asteroid... but if they knew it was a 500m in the beginning I think the call would've been made.
Imagine.. they were going to warn us only 36 hours BEFORE it struck. So if the governments know of asteroids or comets that may be heading for our planet and are the size of the moon or something, there's no way we'll find out (from them) until just before impact.
