Wow, building an EMP? Killer robots?
If any killer robots cross your path, don't worry about building an EMP (the process of which would probably kill you anyway), just flash a copy of Windows Vista at it.
It should back right off after that.

Sorry, but I can't help but get the impression that the op belongs in a Faraday cage.
I thought of using a microwave to create a directional microwave gun. I haven't thought that deeply about it, but ideally it would use either a cantenna or parabolic dish (primestar) to focus the microwaves at your target.
I tend to think of it when I need to paint and there are a million yellow jackets swirling around the soffits. It wouldn't be too powerfull, just enough to cook the bastards is maybe an hour or two.
Also though about using a strong laser with a wide beam to blind them. I wouldn't want to start a fire up there.
I think the explosive will degrade beyond the point of reiability before you ever get to use it on robotic enemies. Let's concentrate on the enemies we face now, like yellow jackets and starlings

Radio waves are not soundwaves, the radio station sends out radio waves (RF) with an anttena and your radio's anttena. Your radio gets the RF and converts the information sent in the broadcasted signal into soundwaves. You can not hear radiowaves (its not moving air).
Google and youtube have info/videos of these things, and sometimes old microwaves have circuit schematics on the inside of the cover. If your thinking about the RFID chip, a much smaller coil/capacitor would be needed.

are you a terrorist? why do you need a EMP? you don't. you want to use it for harm, maybe the fbi should check you out. terrorists like to learn how to create hell for people that do not deserve to be terrorized. I hope you are not a terrorist.

Wait.. How could you ever test this without threatening what you are trying to protect in the first place?? Plus, if you did figure out a way for proper testing, this would be the defense! Then you would have to spend more time defending the defense to protect the offense. It would be extremely difficult to pull proper measurements if your test nullifies the measuring equipment. It's too much and not simple enough. BTW, is there any known occurences of a specifically intended EMP weapon being used? Ever?
