Police Use Tear Gas At Massive Party Near Michigan State

www.cnn.com

Police used tear gas early Sunday to disperse a crowd at a large party near the campus of Michigan State University after fights broke out and officers were pelted with bottles and cans.

About 80 officers worked to control the crowd early Sunday in East Lansing, Michigan.

Police said in a statement that 3,000 to 4,000 people had gathered for the Cedar Fest party late Saturday. They said 52 people were arrested and 48 others were ticketed for various offenses.

Wow - party sounds pretty crazy. Amidst all the cases of "police brutality" you hear, perhaps it was justified in this case, as almost every police officer was supposedly hit.

but had ONE person been tasered you'd hear cries of "POLICE STATE!!!"

ive been tear gassed probably more than any other person on this board...ive teargassed others probably also more than anyone on this board (unless there happen to be any former drill sgts who ran the gas chamber for boot camp pvts)

id take the taser myself....

This is a tough situation. As much as I dispise abuse of authority and feel that police lately are definitley stepping over the line in terms of physical restraint, the fact remains that 4,000 people is quite a large crowd and the potential for things to get ugly is very real.

If the officers were being assaulted on a large scale then I do believe that the tear gas was an easy choice to disperse the crowd, as opposed to rubber bullets, stryker grenades, or bean bag shotguns which could possibly escalate the situation if someone in the crowd was blinded.

How do you deal with 4,000 drunk people who are assaulting officers? Certainly not the same way you would deal with 4, and especially with violence thrown into the mix. Crowd mentality has been known to cause people to do horrific things that they normally would not do in any normal situation.

Bravo on taking care of the situation in a effective yet non-destructive display of force.

I don't normally justify the actions of cops, but in this case they were dealing with a huge crowd alcohol fueled, and they had stuff thrown at them which could have caused many injuries. This is really not a big deal

I doubt the cops would have had anything thrown at them if they had just ignored the party. I have been to some parties that big, and after a while everyone will leave...... when the beer is gone.

It is their job, if they receive a call then they have to respond, if they didnt respond then you would be saying they are not doing there job.
